Position Summary:

The Associate Director of Campus Recreation (Recreational Programs) is responsible for leading the planning, organization, implementation, supervision, and evaluation for all department programs in the areas of Aquatics, Club Sports, Esports, Fitness, Intramural Sports, Outdoor Programs (Bike Shop, Challenge Course, Rentals, Outdoor Leadership Trips and Trainings), and Special Events. The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate and align recreational programs that promote student wellness, leadership, development, and success. Programs should collaborate and compliment Student Affairs and University missions and visions for student engagement and retention. This position will provide programmatic assessment and review, risk management and education support, and develop and manage budgets for responsible areas. This Associate Director will also lead the department marketing team to ensure consistent and accurate communications of programs. The position assists with the development, implementation, and assessment of department strategic planning, and department student employee experience and evaluation. The Associate Director represents the department on a variety of Student Affairs and University committees. This position will report to the Director of Campus Recreation and work closely with the Associate Director of Recreational Services to ensure that all programs, services, trainings, operations, and student employment maintain a high standard of customer excellence and maintain best practices throughout all areas of Campus Recreation.The position is an integral part of the Campus Recreation Department and is expected to provide supplementary support to other program areas in the department, the division when required, and the University when requested.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

This position requires post baccalaureate credentials and/or equivalent education and independent experience. May consider a bachelor’s degree in recreational administration with 5-7 years of progressive recreation programming and specific outdoor, sport, or esport management experience.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills:

Master’s degree in Recreation Management, Sports Management, Experiential Education, Student Affairs Administration or related field and 3 years of progressive recreation programming specific outdoor, sport, or esport management experience in a higher education environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

This position requires knowledge of recreation programming, ability to supervise others, computer skills necessary to perform job functions and ability to learn new software systems such as WordPress, EMS, IMLeagues, When To Work, and other point of sale or management systems.

Ability to manage multiple projects and people simultaneously, with outstanding organizational and leadership abilities. Ability to perform detailed work and make decisions under pressure.

Knowledge of sport, outdoor, traditional and non-traditional recreation and education programs in higher education.

Ability to interact closely and positively with students. Knowledge of programming best practices and risk management procedures. General understanding of budgeting and accounting. Recognition that this is a highly administrative position sometimes coupled with required time in the field.

Additional experience and certifications preferred includes:

  • Experience working with college-age population
  • FA and CPR Instructor Certification
  • Wilderness medicine training or wilderness leadership experiences
  • Understanding of the Theories of College Student Development and how they can be implemented in collegiate recreation
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities
