The Associate Director of Safety (ADS) supports the Director of Safety with the continual improvement, development and implementation of the Liberty University School of Aeronautics (LUSOA) safety program and the promotion of a positive safety culture within the School of Aeronautics. The ADS assists the Director of Safety working with the Director of Flight Operations (DFO) to manage the operational safety of the School of Aeronautics (SOA) Flight Operations. The ADS also assists the Director of Safety working with the Director of Aviation Maintenance Training Program (AMTP) to ensure safety within maintenance training programs. The ADS supports and leads safety culture to ensure a safe student training experience during the 100 hour / 6 day per week flight and maintenance training operations. The ADS will continuously review and analyze flight data and maintenance training trends to ensure the most update to date safety procedures are implemented. The Associate Director leads, manages, and supervises the people and functions of the LUSOA safety program. This position ensures safe and sustainable supervisory presence and oversight of the increasingly complex and demanding flight and maintenance training operational environments. The Associate Director will summarize safety inputs received across the organization, analyze the underlying hazards and risks, and track the implementation of agreed upon solutions. This position will assist the Director of Safety with the day-to-day operations of the LUSOA safety program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains a physical presence during training operations and observes and reports on potential compliance and safety discrepancies.

  • Conducts regular inspections and reviews of supporting operations and training guidance to ensure alignment with industry best practices.
  • Responds to inputs submitted through the online Safety Reporting System.
  • Analyzes underlying hazards and risks from inputs submitted through the Safety Reporting System, operational reports, the AMTP Toolbox Talks, and the annual safety survey.
  • Tracks the implementation of safety actions.
  • Develop trend information from safety inputs and from the Flight Risk Assessment Tool.
  • Communicates safety information to faculty and staff.
  • Develops safety communications appropriate to residential and online students.
  • Promotes safety within the LUSOA staff and student body.
  • Assists the Director of Safety with the investigation of accidents, incidents, and safety occurrences.
  • Reviews LUSOA flight operations and training documentation, including Safety Procedures and Practices, Flight Standards Manual, Checklists, etc.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Safety on events including All Aviators Meetings, Safety Committee meetings, and safety/ops/training meetings.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises the Aviation Safety Student Worker.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Flight Instructor ratings, including CFI, CFII, and MEI.
  • Aviation safety training at the graduate and/or undergraduate level.
  • At least one year of experience teaching in a Part 141, 147, and/or Part 107 training context.

  • Ability to understand, speak, and write in order to effectively convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.

  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of business and community customers and associates.

  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent computer literacy to include an in-depth working knowledge of the Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Problem Solving
  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
  • Will be required to analyze complex problems and come up with solutions in an expeditious manner.

Physical and Sensory Abilities
  • Required to travel to local and campus locations.
  • Frequently required to sit for extended periods to perform desk work or type on a keyboard. Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate verbally.
  • Required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel, or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 20 or fewer pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled setting. It is well-lighted, and the noise level is moderate. The working environment also includes time on an aviation ramp environment, as well as time in a maintenance training context and aircraft simulators.

Driving Requirements

Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
