Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Division of information Technology Services (ITS) at UNCG has broad responsibilities in determining the strategic direction for information technology deployment and use throughout the campus.

Position Summary:

The mission of ITS is to leverage expert staff and partnerships to provide sustainable technology services that are reliable, easy to use, and effective; and to support university strategic initiatives and regional growth with technological acuity and readiness.

This position is a member of the ITS senior leadership team and has responsibility for the development of division budgets, service-based cost accounting, strategic financial planning, and enterprise technology asset lifecycle management. It has significant analytics, reporting, and visualization responsibilities.

The Director has a significant strategic planning and management role across the ITS division, working as an active partner to members of the senior ITS leadership team to develop and mature the division’s financial planning, business operational models, service costing, and division talent management plan.

The position plays a key role in building a permanent culture of IT transparency and accountability to the university community by providing critical financial, operational, and resource management data to facilitate the transformation of ITS strategic planning and operations into data-driven, repeatable, sustainable divisional functions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Business, Information Technology, or a related field, or a Bachelor’s degree and an equivalent amount of experience, and 10 years or more of experience in managing, analyzing, and presenting financial data.
  • Broad understanding of managerial accounting and IT infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic financial planning.
  • Experience with the ServiceNow platform is a plus.

Essential Tasks:

  • Participate as a key thought leader on the senior ITS leadership team, influencing decision-making and identifying budget and spending priorities.
  • Develop appropriate strategies for maximizing the financial sustainability of the ITS service portfolio to ensure that funding and resources are continuously directed toward providing the highest–value technology services to students, faculty, and staff in the most cost-effective way.
  • Work closely with the University budgets, finance, and accounting team to ensure accurate financial reporting and decision support.
  • Analyze ITS budget and spending data and create financial models that yield accurate and timely recommendations to ITS management for data-driven decision-making.
  • Analyze past results and trends, perform variance analysis, and develop financial forecasts for the ITS technology service portfolio.
  • Lead scenario modeling efforts for the evolution of the ITS service portfolio.

Actively engage with the University Budget and Finance team in the Division of Finance and Administration, serving as a collaborative partner and resource.

Essential Tasks:

Work closely with the UNCG Budget and Finance team to:

  • Cultivate deep expertise in the UNC System budgeting and procurement processes and regulatory requirements, the UNCG budget planning requirements and processes, and the ITS Division budget requirements and processes.
  • Build trust between Finance and Administration and ITS based on full transparency and well-articulated needs.
  • Map the financial data required for sound decision-making to ensure that technology investments are aligned with University strategic priorities and dedicated to the best and highest use as campus technology needs evolve.
  • Implement the appropriate mechanisms (dashboards and/or reports) to ensure that the data needed is live, accurate, and available.
  • Help shape university-wide budget process improvements.

Develop and Provide Oversight to the ITS Asset Management Strategy.

Essential Tasks:

  • Build a total cost of ownership of assets (TCOA) model for the ITS portfolio of enterprise services, including hardware and software acquisition, management and support, communications, end-user expenses, and the opportunity cost of downtime, training, and other productivity losses.
  • Plan, monitor, and record software license and hardware assets to ensure compliance with vendor contracts and data-driven decision-making for asset lifecycle management.
  • Lead the development of analytics and procurement strategies to optimize technology spending across the organization.
  • Develop and implement procedures for tracking ITS assets and oversee data and process quality control in the ITS asset management system (ServiceNow).
  • Identify opportunities and drive ITS business process improvements.
  • Ensure that sustainable asset management for the ITS division is built and operational in ServiceNow and mature the ITS organization to a constant state of asset management readiness, ensuring that proper controls and documentation are consistent across the organization, managed in a central divisional repository and reviewed and updated at established intervals with organizational accountability.
