Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Dean of Students is a unit in Student Affairs with a mission to provide support and assistance to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill community focused on empowering students, to succeed in navigating the University environment. Position Summary:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Associate Dean of Students (ADoS) provides leadership and direction for the Student Support and Case Management (SSCM) area of the Dean of Students (DOS) office and provides day-to-day leadership in the DOS office. Applying current best practices, research, and non-clinical case management methodologies, this position is responsible for the hiring, training, and supervision of all professional staff within the functional area. Among the position’s responsibilities will be serving as the chair of the Student Care Team, leading and directing the non-clinical student case management program (intake, assessment, intervention, follow-up, and documentation), supporting basic needs insecurity efforts and programs, evaluating student emergency and hardship funding requests, and advancing campus financial well-being efforts. The Associate Dean will share responsibility with Dean of Students for student crisis/emergency response and follow-up through the day-to-day training and oversight of the Student Affairs staff that serve on the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), the Student Affairs on-call student crisis/emergency team and will collaborate with the Dean of Students on the development of related protocols, policies, and partnerships. The ADoS will lead strategic planning and evaluation for the area including the ongoing assessment of the process, programs, and services and use the information to make data driven decisions and recommendations, as well as be a lead administrator for the case management software and related technology. The role is a visible and highly collaborative leader and will provide coaching, training, protocol consulting, and general outreach to internal and external constituencies, including students, faculty, staff, families, and community partners.

The position will serve on the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), support high interest event response, and is designated as both a Campus Security Authority and Responsible Employee. The ADoS may serve as the designee for the Dean of Students position in their absence.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

  • Experience supervising professional staff through direct reports and or via position-related and significant committee/taskforce leadership.
  • Knowledge of current best practices, research, and non-clinical case management methodologies.
  • Experience serving on a multi-disciplinary team that has responsibility for reviewing behavioral concerns.
  • Experience working with diverse undergraduate and graduate/professional student, faculty, and staff communities, which reflect an array of ethnic, racial, cultural, faith, gender, and other identities.
  • Experience effectively assisting and/or supporting a large and diverse case load of individuals who are involved in or impacted by personal crisis, mental health concerns, trauma, and or other disruptive/disturbing life events (e.g., 1-1 meetings, making referrals, service coordination) with great care and sensitivity.
  • Successful candidates must have experience working autonomously and as an effective member of a collaborative, and fast-paced team.
  • Experience effectively prioritizing and navigating complex emergent situations and easily adapt to changing priorities based on emergent needs.
  • Experience managing confidential and sensitive information and situations with diplomacy and demonstration of excellent critical thinking and sound judgement.
  • Experience with the application of federal, state, and local laws, policies, and/or regulations.
  • Understanding of the environment and culture of a highly selective, competitive, research University with the ability to work collaboratively with on and off-campus partners, including faculty.
  • Availability/flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Relevant master’s degree (counseling, higher education, social work, student affairs, psychology, or similar field), post-bachelor’s professional degree, or foreign degree equivalent and eight years of full-time progressively responsible, relevant professional experience with at least five years obtained post-graduate/professional degree attainment.

  • Direct experience in non-clinical case management in a post-secondary, higher education setting.
  • Experience leading a student care team, behavioral intervention team, or similarly purposed and structured multidisciplinary team on a college or university campus.
  • Experience designing and implementing effective programs, services, and systems that assist and/or support a large and diverse case load of college students who are involved in or impacted by personal crisis, mental health concerns, trauma, and or other disruptive/disturbing life events (e.g., 1-1 meetings, making referrals, service coordination) with great care and sensitivity.
  • Four years of experience supervising, hiring, training, and evaluating professional staff.
  • Experience leading and collaborating on multi-disciplinary crisis, care, and/or behavior intervention teams in a higher education setting.
  • Excellent communicator (written and verbal) with experience delivering information to diverse constituencies in individual, as well as small and large group settings using multiple formats (e.g., in-person, telephone, virtual/video).
  • In-depth knowledge of current best practices, research, and non-clinical case management methodologies AND experience applying these to day-to-day practices, polices, systems, and assessment.
  • Experience building and sustaining relationships with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, parents / families, and community partners to address a wide array of situations and needs.
  • Experience with the application of federal, state, and local laws, policies, and/or regulations, specifically FERPA, Title IX, HIPPA, Clery, VAWA, and others that are similar and apply to higher education.
  • Knowledge and experience maximizing the use of non-clinical case management software; experience with Advocate by Symplicity is a plus.
  • Experience developing and implementing operational and service-based assessments/evaluations and using data to inform practice and/or policy.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
