Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

Institutional Research and Assessment within the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost organization supports Carolina’s mission and strategic priorities through research and evaluation that informs institutional planning and decision making. The office uses data analytics and qualitative approaches to transform data into actionable information and disseminate it for use in University decision making and continuous improvement in a wide variety of academic and operational areas. These include student progress and success, curriculum and academic program learning outcomes, educational policy impact, effectiveness of services, faculty resources, enrollment management, and many other areas.

Institutional Research & Assessment partners with the Office of Undergraduate Education in the College of Arts & Sciences and undergraduate education offices in the professional schools with responsibility for course delivery, advising, student success programs, curriculum development and evaluation, and achievement of student learning outcomes. Undergraduate Education leads the implementation of the new IDEAS in Action general education core curriculum and student support services such as Academic Advising, Center for Student Success, Undergraduate Curricula, Honors Carolina, Instructional Innovation, UNC-Duke Robertson Scholars Leadership Program, and Undergraduate Research. The professional schools that offer undergraduate courses and programs are also key participants in the institutional planning and evaluation of the effectiveness of the undergraduate curriculum and student success services.

Position Summary:

The Associate Director of Evaluation plans and leads implementation of assessment activities and analyzes and reports findings to support the ongoing improvement of learning outcomes for the general education Ideas in Action Curriculum and various undergraduate student success initiatives. This position will report to the Associate Provost for Institutional Research & Assessment and will work closely with administrators, faculty, and staff engaged in undergraduate education across the University, including the College of Arts & Sciences and the professional schools. The position supports the execution of a strategic vision and plan for assessment, program review, and use of results to improve student learning. The position will also leverage the shared vision of undergraduate student success to strengthen retention and persistence rates by collecting and analyzing data and generating results to improve progression through completion of college-level courses and the attainment of a college credential.

The individual will be a collaborative, creative, independent problem-solver who can work with diverse stakeholders including university leaders, faculty, and staff from multiple disciplines and functions in the College, the professional schools, and offices across campus. The position will be a member of research and evaluation teams within Institutional Research & Assessment with responsibility for University level data analysis and evaluation focusing on academic programs and student achievement. assessment. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or professional-level institutional planning/assessment experience, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Demonstrated competence with quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods and practices in higher education.
Knowledge of postsecondary curriculum design and development processes.
Ability to exhibit leadership, interpersonal skills, initiative, enthusiasm and collaboration with faculty, staff, and campus stakeholders in the execution of the responsibilities of the position.
Strong analytical and technical writing skills.
Demonstrated project management skills.
Demonstrated technical competence in extracting data from information systems and merging data from multiple sources.
Demonstrated competence with data collection, analysis, and presentation of results as well as with generation of written summaries, reports, and presentation materials.
Demonstrated competence in outcomes assessment design including development of direct measures of learning and other evaluation methodologies.
Advanced knowledge and skills in using statistical packages (such as SPSS, SAS, STATA) and/or writing queries using tools such as SQL or R to analyze quantitative data.
Demonstrated ability to create dashboards using Tableau or other visualization tools.
Experience developing and administering survey instruments using tools such as Qualtrics or related products.
Ability to conduct interviews and focus groups.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Equivalent of five (5) years or more of full-time work experience at the college or university level.
Ph.D. or equivalent
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and produce outcomes in a timely way.
Knowledge of student learning outcomes assessment best practices.
Ability to plan and conduct short-range and long-range projects.
Ability to facilitate work teams.
Ability to use qualitative data analysis tools to identify themes in responses to open-ended survey questions and essays.
