Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

Founded in 1920, the UNC School of Social Work consistently ranks as one of the best in the nation. Through innovative research that improves practice and enhances education, we search for solutions to societal challenges such as poverty, child maltreatment, economic security, equity, mental health, violence, and substance abuse. Home to leading social work faculty for over 100 years, we strive to advance the mission of the School of Social Work:

- To expand knowledge regarding social problems and programs,
- To educate social workers for advanced practice, and
- To provide leadership in the development of socially and economically just policies and programs that strengthen individuals, families, and communities.

Position Summary:

The School of Social Work (SSW) is accepting applications for an Associate Dean of Community Engagement and Outreach (AD). This is a senior-level administrative leadership role and, depending on candidates’ qualifications, a secondary appointment as a faculty member will be considered.

The AD will serve as a member of the SSW’s leadership team, create and direct the Office of Community Engagement and Outreach (OCEO), and support our commitment to working with communities to enhance research, teaching, and clinical training. In particular, the AD will lead five major efforts:

(1) Outreach & Engagement: In collaboration with the Dean, the AD will provide leadership and support for outreach and engagement activities that will connect the school with communities throughout NC and beyond. The outreach activities will help faculty, staff, and students partner with external groups, such as nonprofits, agencies, schools, and advocates. The AD will work closely with relevant units to oversee the planning, marketing, and community outreach for programs and projects led by the administrative team, groups and institutes, community partners, and SSW faculty.

(2) Professional Development & Lifelong Learning: Additionally, the AD will oversee aspects of planning, marketing, and implementation of events and initiatives related to community engagement. This role ensures that our outreach and engagement activities provide learning opportunities, advance scholarship, support innovation, and foster professional development opportunities. As such, this position has responsibility for managing the Continuing Education Unit and coordinating with Academic Affairs to launch new certificates and credentialing programs, to measure the impact and identify opportunities to expand and improve certificates and programs, and to adapt to the needs of the existing workforce.

(3) Community-Engaged Scholarship: The AD will be responsible for coordinating relevant SSW and university staff, engaging the community, ensuring necessary processes are followed, and that resources are available to support the successful development and launch of community-engaged scholarship. The individual will help create and maintain reciprocal, inclusive partnerships between the SSW and communities so that research, teaching, and service are conducted with communities to address social problems. The AD will foster a collegial and collaborative work environment and work to improve SSW’s relationship with the community and its capacity for community-engaged scholarship.

(4) Creation & Oversight of the OCEO & Recharge Center: The AD will be responsible for the creation and management of the OCEO, with additional responsibilities for direction and operational support of the Recharge Center. In service to internal and external groups and entities, the AD will serve as the OCEO administrative officer and as supervisor for a team of fixed-term faculty and staff providing management of processes, policies, operational needs, and complex personnel issues. The OCEO will operate a service recharge center providing consultation, evaluation, research, and technical assistance to help UNC researchers and non-profits build their capacity. The Recharge Center will advance the teaching and research mission of the school and university while also helping statewide non-profits who require added capacity and expertise to optimize their productivity and better serve their stakeholders.

(5) Community Relations & Coordination: Working with leadership, the AD will cultivate relationships at all community levels with a particular focus on individuals from the public sector, elected decision makers, non-profit leaders, and health and human service industry partners. They will be a critical point of contact for organizations and entities seeking the school’s involvement and input on community matters. Networking with community members and other leaders will be an essential role of this position.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Experience in higher education with administrative and/or leadership experience in social service or research administration. Given that this position entails the creation of a new office, it is imperative that the candidates demonstrate experience conceptualizing, implementing, and testing the effectiveness of new or existing programs, structures, policies, projects and/or change processes.

Individual must possess the ability and socioemotional skills to engage and communicate a message of hope and possibility to diverse parties within the Community, University and School of Social Work and create the necessary collaborative partnerships to overcome the complex challenges they and we face together.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Preferred qualifications include:
- A minimum of 7 years’ experience in higher education with administrative and/or leadership experience (e.g., experience as a department chair, assistant dean, and/or program director or coordinator) or leadership experience in social service or research administration.
- A master’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology, or similar discipline.
