The University of Miami Libraries seeks applications for a collaborative, innovative, service-oriented professional to serve as Research Data Management Librarian. Reporting to the Director of Research Data & Open Scholarship, the Research Data Management Librarian is responsible for research data-oriented pedagogical and support services for students, faculty and staff across UM’s campuses. The person in this role will provide guidance for research data management, open science, data curation, data literacy, and data publishing, as well as play an important role in teaching, developing workshops, course support, consultations, and small group/one-on-one instruction for a range of disciplines across the natural sciences, social sciences, and the humanities.

The Research Data Management Librarian will oversee the development and delivery of research data management and data curation services including understanding discipline-specific patron needs, updating content on the departmental website, working within Scholarship@Miami, the UM institutional repository and research information hub, and supporting broader unit goals of enhancing student outcomes and lowering barriers to entry in the research lifecycle. In addition, the Research Data Management Librarian will participate in unit goals of promoting data literacy to members of the campus community.

This is a fundamentally collaborative position that requires working closely with members of the Research Data & Open Scholarship unit. The Research Data Management Librarian will also work with a variety of library and campus partners, including members of the Richter Library Learning & Research Services, the STEM & Interdisciplinary Research Librarian, the Data Scientist, the Institute for Data Science & Computing (IDSC), the Graduate School, and affiliates of the Learning Commons.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Estimated percentages for responsibilities: 40% teaching and consultations, 30% data management and curation efforts (including maintenance of data curation and RDM-related web content), 10% training, 10% research and professional development, 10% service.

Performance

  • In collaboration with Research Data & Open Scholarship faculty and staff, provide instructional and consultative services for students, faculty, and staff in research data management; data curation, and access; and data-related software and methodologies;
  • Provide office hours in the Digital Scholars’ Lab to assist students working in the lab, answer patron questions, and refer questions to the relevant faculty or staff member, as needed;
  • In collaboration with Research Data & Open Scholarship faculty and staff, particularly the Data Scientist, provide data curation and data management services to researchers across disciplines;
  • Work collaboratively with the GIS Librarian for Instruction & Engagement to refer and consult on relevant requests involving GIS data discovery and GIS-based research;
  • Create and maintain relevant workshop content, descriptions, events, and training resources on the Research Data & Open Scholarship library website;
  • In collaboration with library partners, particularly Creative Studio, assist with efforts to showcase relevant student and faculty work;
  • Assist in efforts to track, analyze, and interpret assessment data to make recommendations to improve and/or update Research Data & Open Scholarship faculty and staff consultations, events, and workshops;
  • Stay abreast of developments and trends in research data management services, data visualization, and data analysis, and effectively communicate their implications to library and campus stakeholders;
  • Assist with interdepartmental activities and strategic relationships with campus stakeholders that promote research data management and open scholarship initiatives;
  • As part of a larger campus effort, participate in the development of research data management services and faculty research; and
  • In pursuit of UML and University strategic objectives, model the University’s “DIRECCT” values (diversity, integrity, responsibility, excellence, compassion, creativity, and teamwork).

Service

  • Network, collaborate, and actively participate in local, regional, national, and international organizations focused on research data management services, data curation, GIS services, digital storytelling, and data visualization;
  • Represent and promote the University of Miami Libraries in local, state-wide, regional, national, and international organizations as appropriate;
  • Serve on/participate in University organizations, committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate; and
  • Participate in and/or lead library-level committees, taskforces, and/or special projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

UM Libraries welcomes applicants who are new to the field of research data management librarianship to apply for this position.

Required

  • Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program or relevant advanced degree;
  • Curiosity and openness to learning best practices in research data management services and relevant new technologies;
  • Analytic, problem-solving and critical thinking skills;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and productively with others;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred

  • Relevant experience working with research data management at an academic institution or in another research-based context;
  • Experience working in academic libraries;
  • Experience with data repositories; both data discovery at the beginning of the research life cycle and/or data publication at the end of the research life cycle.
  • Experience with the research lifecycle (e.g., associated discovery, access, technology, and preservation challenges);
  • Introductory knowledge of research data management in an academic grant driven environment (e.g., DMPs, DMPTool, data licensing, data preservation, data sharing, metadata creation, version control).
  • Introductory knowledge of at least one commonly used data analysis software program or programming language (e.g., R, SPSS, Python; and
  • Experience with web design and web editing (HTML, Javascript, CSS).

The Louis Calder Memorial Library is located on the UM medical campus near downtown Miami, approximately 8 miles from Coral Gables. Its staff of 22 primarily serves the Miller School of Medicine’s educational and biomedical research programs, and UM’s clinical enterprise, UHealth. Library services are also provided to the Medical School’s primary teaching hospital, which shares a campus with the Miller School. The Miller School of Medicine’s regional campus is in Boca Raton, Florida.

Salary and Benefits:

Compensation will be competitive and will be commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the person selected.
