Position description
The Library of the University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks an innovative, forward-looking, service-oriented, and collaborative professional for an exciting opportunity to serve as Collection Strategist Librarian and liaison to the Music department.

DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Director of Collection Strategies, the successful candidate will be one of a team of seven librarians and collection strategists and an analytics coordinator in the Collection Strategies Department. The Collection Strategist contributes to the strategic allocation of library resources for the acquisition and management of diverse general research collections, including music, visual, and performing arts collections, selected Western languages collections, and other collections in the Humanities and Social Science as assigned. The successful candidate provides research and teaching support to UCSB faculty and students in the Department of Music. The Collection Strategist works collaboratively and closely with other library departments and with campus faculty and students in a highly interdisciplinary research community renowned for its academic excellence and global impact.

RESPONSIBILITIES

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT

Responsible for the development and management of general research collections in Music, Visual and Performing Arts, selected Western language collections such as German and Italian, and other collecting areas in the Humanities and Social Science as assigned. Manages allocated collection funds to ensure their timely and appropriate expenditure. Works closely with vendors and content providers. Establishes and fosters relationships with donors and community members in partnership with the Library’s Development officer.
Actively collaborates with the Collection Strategies Department on developing new evidence-based methodologies for the acquisition of scholarly resources and content, collection management, and assessment of delivery platforms and across formats (including print, digital, media, data, and other emerging formats).
Implements innovative models and approaches to collection development that effectively steward the library’s investment in general collections. Contributes to the departmental budget planning and funding allocations for the library’s collections and content based on quantitative and qualitative assessment strategies informing allocation of the library’s collections budget.
Collaborates with library staff in technical services and other library units on developing consistent access, discovery, and stewardship methodologies for general collections across their lifecycle.
Evaluates opportunities and makes recommendations for redirecting the library’s investment in collections toward resources with the greatest potential for transforming the system of scholarly communication and open dissemination of research. Monitors local, systemwide, and vendor-provided reports to identify collection-related trends and patterns.
Facilitates opportunities for faculty and students to share their scholarship and learning via the Library. Participates in scholarly communication outreach, education, and advocacy, including maintaining an understanding of UC’s open access policies and the systems and resources that support them (e.g., eScholarship, Elements/UC Publication Management System). Evaluates opportunities and makes recommendations for redirecting the library’s investment in collections to resources with the greatest potential for transforming the system of scholarly communication toward open dissemination of research.
Represents UCSB on systemwide committees and ad-hoc groups related to collections initiatives. Participates in professional development activities.

ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT AND INSTRUCTION

Works in a team-based environment with other subject librarians to provide research support and information literacy instruction to the Music Department.
Engages in proactive outreach and communications with the Music Department to maintain awareness of academic programs and priorities, curricular developments, accreditation cycles, research methodologies, and faculty and graduate student research and teaching. Promotes the library’s collections, services, and spaces and seeks feedback to increase their effectiveness.
Provides research consultations in person and virtually to faculty and students engaged in traditional and emerging research practices within the Music Department. Works collaboratively with the Library’s Research Data Services Program and DREAM Lab to support data-intensive research and digital scholarship. Supports undergraduate students involved in sustained research projects. Promotes disciplinary resources (collections, databases, primary source material) through the creation of online guides or digital or physical exhibitions. Serves on disciplinary teams with functional experts throughout the library to collaboratively support faculty and students in the humanities and social sciences. Contributes to the assessment of the Library’s Academic Engagement Program.
Designs and teaches course-integrated information literacy sessions utilizing the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and other disciplinary standards. Advises faculty on assignment design and learning outcomes related to information literacy. In partnership with Teaching & Learning librarians, works with assigned academic departments and programs to incorporate information literacy learning outcomes into the curriculum. Participates in assessment activities associated with the library’s instruction program.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
At the time of application, an advanced academic degree: ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science OR an advanced degree in Music.
Two years of experience working in an academic or research library.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Music subject expertise acquired through formal study or relevant experience.
Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by submitted materials, including the CV, cover letter, and an optional statement of diversity.
Preferred qualifications
Reading knowledge of Western languages, preferably German or Italian.
Demonstrated interest or experience in collection development and management in an academic library.
Familiarity with trends in publishing, scholarly communication, and evolving technologies in music or arts.
Skills in assessing and interpreting quantitative and qualitative data.
Experience in reference or library instruction.
Evidence of flexibility and initiative when working within a fast-paced, changing environment.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and to engage with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
Demonstrated commitment to professional development.
