Cleveland, United States University Hospitals Health System Full time

Chair, Department of Medicine and Physician-In-Chief

University Hospitals Health System (UH), in partnership with Korn Ferry, invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Chair, Department of Medicine and Physician-In-Chief.

With a rich history spanning over 158 years, University Hospitals has remained dedicated to its mission of healing, teaching, and discovery. As an esteemed academic medical center and community hospital network, the $6B health system has expanded its presence throughout Northeast Ohio, prioritizing personalized and compassionate patient care, groundbreaking medical advancements, and accessible, high-quality healthcare. Currently, UH’s total research portfolio exceeds $197M in annual extra-mural support and trains more than 1,100 residents and fellows. The flagship academic medical center within the health system, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, has maintained affiliations with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (CWRSOM) since 1895, in addition to collaborations with Northeast Ohio Medical University, the University of Oxford (England), the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, and National Taiwan University College of Medicine. Commercialization of discoveries into therapeutics has been a top strategic priority and one of UH’s most unique programs is the Harrington Project for Discovery & Development—a new commercialization model designed to accelerate promising discoveries into new medicines for unmet needs. The Harrington Project consists of an aligned set of mission-driven organizations: The Harrington Discovery Institute (non-profit) and BioMotiv-Advent (for- profit). Together, the organizations support prestigious physician-scientists and scientists, transform drug development from research institutions, and create a robust biotech development platform for the benefit of patients and society.

Today, these affiliations and collaborations have formed one of the largest biomedical research centers in the nation, and University Hospitals’ physicians have pioneered innovative approaches to patient care, leading-edge treatments and procedures, and breakthrough medicines. After leading the Department of Medicine graciously and successfully for the last decade, Robert A. Salata, MD, plans to step down as Chair to allow a new leader to embark and lead the Department to continued growth and recognition. A national search is underway.

Reporting to Nicole Maronian, MD, Interim President of University Hospitals Physician Services, Daniel Simon, MD, President of Academic and External Affairs and Chief Scientific Officer, and Stanton Gerson, MD, Dean of the School of Medicine and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, the Chair of the Department of Medicine will have the opportunity to build on the Department’s well-established and highly-respected educational, clinical, and research programs. Tasked with fostering an environment of collaboration, integrity, trust, and transparency within the Department, as well as between the Department, UH, and CWRSOM, the Chair will further develop and grow the department’s recognition and prominence enterprise wide, working with existing leadership, division chiefs, center and institute directors, and VA section heads.

The Chair is responsible for providing leadership over the Department, including its staff, faculty, graduate and medical students, fellows, and other clinicians and scientists. They will be accountable for carrying out the missions of the Department, research and education, as well as carrying out all operations, management, and financial performance of the Department. This new Chair will have the opportunity to further expand the Department with a number of new faculty recruitments and is expected to continue to shape the Department for national recognition.

The ideal candidate will be a board-certified MD or MD/PhD, have demonstrated leadership experience within a complex and dynamic academic health system and/or medical school, and be eligible for a faculty appointment at the Professor level at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Clinically active candidates must be board certified and eligible for licensure in the state of Ohio.

Korn Ferry is assisting UH with this important recruitment. Applications should include a detailed curriculum vitae and a letter of interest. To ensure full consideration, inquiries, nominations, and applications should be submitted electronically, in confidence, to tara.vittese@kornferry.com
