Job Profile Summary

​This role focuses on providing professional and nonprofessional nursing care services in accordance with physician orders. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Nursing Leadership duties: Controls, directs, and participates in the activities of the organization through a hierarchy of managers and supervisors. Responsibilities also include long-term strategic planning, determining the policies of the organization, and allocating its resources and making decisions regarding organization growth and diversification to accomplish entity's vision. A management role that supervises employees focusing on tactical, operational activities within a specified area, with the majority of time spent overseeing area of responsibility, planning, prioritizing and/or directing the responsibilities of employees. Goal achievement is typically accomplished through performance of direct and/or indirect reports. A role that supervises para-professional employees. Responsibilities that typically include: Setting day-to-day operational objectives for team, problems faced may be difficult but typically are not complex, and ensures policies, practices and procedures are understood and followed by direct reports, customers and stakeholders.

Job Overview

This position utilizes the nursing process, leadership skills, and current evidence based clinical knowledge to assess the needs of the departments, collaborate with health team members to coordinate patient care, and set criteria for the quality of patient care. Develops and sustains an environment that promotes excellence in clinical practice and customer satisfaction, while striving for optimal efficiency, productivity, and utilization of all resources. Provides patient and staff education, clinical supervision, and participates in unit-based activities (quality assessment, shared governance, quality review, staff development in-services, simulation drills, etc.)

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN).

  2. Registered Nurse (RN) license.

  3. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  4. Three (3) years of nursing leadership experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN).

  2. Five (5) years of nursing leadership experience.

  3. Nursing specialty certification.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  1. Acts as a role model for clinical excellence and promotion of professional practice. Is visible and available to answer questions, assist with treatments/procedures.

  2. Assists in clinical problem-solving and the development of critical thinking skills.

  3. Assists with ensuring implementation of the nursing process and established nursing standards.

  4. Demonstrates standards compliance through staff documentation in the medical record.

  5. Promotes excellent relations and collaboration between staff and others on each unit in the hospital.

  6. Utilizes the available resources in a cost-effective manner.

  7. Supports unit performance improvement.

  8. Assists with developing and retaining employees through coaching and performance feedback resulting in mutual trust and respect.

  9. Assists with the Coordination of all aspects of Performance Management including: setting expectations, continuing education, credentialing, performance appraisals, auditing, concurrent monitoring, utilization review, risk management and active problem identification.

  10. Performs required performance appraisals on time for unit staff based on hospital job descriptions and unit-based performance standards.

  11. Assists in identifying, planning and implementing educational programs based on staff needs. Regularly participates in direct staff learning activities.

  12. Participates in the professional development for self and other department/unit specific team members.

  13. Conducts regular supervisory rounds as applicable to include the following monitoring of staff documentation, patient and customer satisfaction, patient education, nursing care and unit services provided, implementation and use of protocols, and overall work environment

  14. Participates in identifying needs at the unit and organizational levels and assists with strategic planning, organizing, executing, controlling and evaluating systems, processes and practice, patient care and information processing

  15. Participates in hospital shared governance councils.

  16. Observes and monitors compliance of nursing staff in the daily practice of care delivery.

  17. Mentors staff to provide evidence-based practice and clinical care.

  18. Encourages professional growth through in-services, councils, clinical ladder, certification, advanced schooling, etc.

  19. Evaluates effectiveness of educational programs based on performance improvement.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking.

  2. Lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfer patients and equipment.

  3. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching.

  4. Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, sick patients, bodily substances, noise and possible exposure to radiation, lasers, electric shock, etc.

  5. Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases and other transmissible infections.

  6. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to reports and computer equipment.

  7. Hearing and visual acuity sufficient to perform examinations, observe patients, read monitors and documents, and hear audible equipment alarms.

  8. May have contact with hazardous materials.

  1. Ability to apply the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

  2. Management and interpersonal skills necessary to provide leadership to a variety of employees; to maintain a variety of internal and external contacts; and to interact effectively with patients, families; physicians and other departments.

  3. Analytical abilities/critical thinking skills to identify and resolve operational problems.

  4. Demonstrated leadership abilities.

  9. Clinical competence in nursing practice.

  10. Ability to work collaboratively with nurses, physicians, and administrative colleagues.

  11. Ability to navigate complex electronic clinical and administrative information systems and applications.
