Washington, United States Federal Highway Administration Part time

This is a developmental position with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Department of Transportation (DOT). The position is designed to provide interns with challenging assignments that will broaden their perspectives on issues facing the government and prepare them for future positions throughout the government.

The Student Trainee (Environmental Specialist) Pathways Intern will assist higher graded staff in collecting, sorting, and organizing information for evaluating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and processes and procedures. You will:

Attain knowledge in FHWA’s environmental policies and programs, including relevant laws, regulations, guidance, and procedures.
Support the development of analysis tools and models.
Support data analysis including analyzing output data from air quality and noise analysis tools and models to create graphs, tables, and maps to explain the patterns and trends.
Assist in conducting data and literature search, analyzing facts, and preparing reports.

The ideal candidate should be comfortable working within a team environment in a hybrid work setting with staff in various offices and units around the country; have  good written and oral communication skills; with the ability to prepare written documents that may be ultimately viewable and understandable by the general public; ability to work independently; eager to learn; experience with data analysis software (such as R, Tableau, Python) and mapping (such as GIS) and knowledge on NEPA a plus.
