Amentum is seeking a Safety Specialist on the 1st shift industrial maintenance team in Durham, NC 

  • Typical work schedule is 6:30 AM – 4:00 PM; hours may vary based on business demand.

Under general supervision, the ES&H Specialist performs technical work in a wide range of environmental, health and safety disciplines to achieve compliance with ES&H standards along with federal and state regulatory requirements.

Must leverage knowledge and applications of the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of an environmental specialty. Assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of safety and health programs, systems and procedures. Monitors and prevents hazards and diseases that could be found in the work area. Investigates accidents, injuries, and complaints concerning hazards in the workplace. Recommends improvements in processes, design, procedures and operating equipment to minimize hazard. Conducts employee training, emergency preparedness and assures the quality of programs. Provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice. May provide guidance for a team of ES&H specialists and/or support personnel.

Essential Functions:

  • Evaluates, plans and administers training programs, as well as other employee safety procedures.
  • Conducts comprehensive safety audits and inspections and recommends actions for the correction of hazardous situations for compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Investigates injuries, conditions and incidents that do, or could, involve actual or potential liability.
  • Maintains adequate records of pertinent data and compiles or initiates the compilation of the required reports on individual job occupational injury and illness experience.
  • Plans and coordinates safety and health classes for technical and supervisory employees.
  • Investigates accidents, injuries, and complaints concerning hazards in the workplace.
  • Recommends improvements in processes, design, procedures and operating equipment to minimize hazard.
  • Conducts employee training, emergency preparedness and assures the quality of programs.
  • Provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice.
  • Ability to collaborate with client/site EHS personnel to address potential hazards or unsafe conditions found.

Within AMENTUM, our group provides facilities and production maintenance services for our clients’ industrial, manufacturing, distribution, pharmaceutical, and commercial sites worldwide.

  • We run our own crews of Production Maintenance Techs, CNC Service Techs, Automation Techs, Industrial Electricians, Maintenance Mechanics, Industrial HVAC Techs, Logistics / Crib Management, Planner/ Schedulers, Supervisors and safety professionals inside our customers’ facilities to keep their infrastructure operating smoothly.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Health or Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering or a related role, or demonstrated equivalent combination of education and experience in a safety professional role.
  • In addition to education requirements, 2 years of experience in an occupational safety role. Working knowledge of safety in a facilities or production maintenance environment.

  • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test.
  • This position may require a valid Driver’s License.

  • This position will require the ability to obtain a security access badge at our client’s location. Note - U.S Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location
  • This position may require various shifts, weekends, and alternative work schedules.

Physical Requirements:

  • Some tasks will require repetitive wrist movement.
  • Some tasks will require the ability to walk extensively throughout facilities during a workday.
  • Requires ability to read and understand information contained in a variety of documents or displayed on a computer screen.
  • Requires ability to use a variety of office equipment and to operate a computer keyboard to access data bases, to send/receive messages and to prepare documents.
  • Requires ability to attend meetings throughout the site and potentially travel to other AMENTUM, customer and/or vendor locations in the area, as well as some air travel to more distant locations.
  • Requires the ability to communicate with others on the telephone and in one-on-one or group discussions, meetings and presentations.
  • Demonstrated fluency in computer use including the full Microsoft product line.
  • Requires some moving of light to medium weight materials into desks, filing cabinets and other storage locations.
  • Requires the ability to interact with all clients in a professional and friendly manner despite periods of stress.
     

Special Requirements:

  • Wear steel toe safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats and other Personal Protective Equipment as needed.
  • Cope with demands (stressors) that are associated with the job and/or the work environment so that acceptable levels of performance and overall contribution are maintained.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.
  • Experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting multiple sites simultaneously.
  • Experience effectively delivering training to multiple levels of personnel.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Experience using software to enter and interpret safety-related data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Other Attributes:

  • Must be willing to work overtime when required.  May be required to work holidays and weekends.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 5%.
