The Managing Director - Head of Operational Strategy for CSG - Corporate Mortgage Finance, will be an integral component to the building out of the Corporate Mortgage Finance Group vertical for Huntington Bank and will serve as a key member of the leadership team. In collaboration with the Head of CMF and other internal partners, this role works to design and oversee operational functions inside and outside of the bank as well as create, manage and enhance systems and processes for controlled, scalable and cost-effective operations supporting the Corporate Mortgage Finance Group (CMFG).

You will manage a team of operations professionals as direct reports in addition to overseeing work performed by internal groups and 3rd party vendors supporting CMFG activities; provide oversight and reporting on daily operational and shared services activities that are performed by direct reports, internal groups, and 3rd party vendors; work collaboratively with the Head of CMF, Banker/RMs, Portfolio Managers, and other internal colleagues to support current and prospective growth of the business; represent the business with internal constituents in the development and execution of a comprehensive roadmap for CMF infrastructure, including the data strategy to support business analytics while complying with corporate standards; provide leadership on special projects such as integration of acquisitions, evaluation/execution of new business opportunities and resources, and management of operational improvement and strategic projects.

The CMF Head of Operational Strategy requires a proven track record of success in Mortgage Finance, operations and bringing up a new line of business. You must have strong cross-bank relationship building and operational risk management experience with deep and specific knowledge of the industry and sub-sectors assigned to be covered for the group; proven excellent oversight and communication skills; strong evidence of collaboration, coordination with leadership team, colleagues and vendors; previous related multi-level team management experience is required.

This position reports to the Head of CMF, or another senior leader determined by the Head of the group. Note: This position is open to remote work.

In this role, as the Head of Operational Strategy, you will be performing the following responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement an operational strategy to meet assigned goals, mitigate and maintain operational risk oversight of the group's lending activities and to drive growth; deliver satisfactory loan review, audit and OCC review results for operational processes and controls; provide management oversight and ensure compliance with bank requirements of assigned operational functions performed by internal bank groups and 3rd party vendors on behalf of CMFG.

  • Manage and develop a team of Operations professionals that deliver on team and personal growth goals while providing operational execution that support the Corporate Mortgage Finance group objectives; develop and maintain an operational staffing model to deliver best in class group performance; elevate, empower and enable the effective and efficient operation of each operational function.

  • Develop and implement processes that create efficiencies and maintain controls while managing costs to maximize the revenue producing capabilities of CMFG; develop, implement and maintain compliance with approved operational policies, procedures and loan level guidelines; appropriately leverage approved technology to create scalable solutions with proper level of controls and oversight/reporting.

  • Interact with senior management and key stakeholders to determine segment information needs and lead a centralized team to develop and provide flexible, informative reports and tools that support those needs; develop and implement tools or processes that enhance reporting and analytic capabilities; oversee the documentation of key performance and risk metrics and ensure team is meeting data governance requirements of the bank;

  • Develop materials/presentations as assigned for review and approval by executive leadership; ensure appropriate and on-time distribution, confidentiality and retention to the Board of Directors, Executive and Group leadership as directed.

  • Partner with RM Lead and PM Lead to create an effective process for oversight and active surveillance of facilities, potential or identified deteriorating credit risk profile situations; immediately report actual or potential counter-party performance, compliance or facility level credit or operational problems to CMFG leadership and other impacted internal parties; ensure timely and accurate upline communication and visibility of industry and market changes that may impact CMFG clients or business.

  • Act as the primary CMFG liaison on all internal and regulatory exams and business line reviews; maintain constant and comprehensive upline reporting on any issues or potential concerns identified prior to a formal finding being issued; work in collaboration with CMFG and CSG leadership to oversee findings, remediation responses and plan resolutions along with Segment Risk and project management of internal and regulatory audits in partnership with business line leaders.

  • Build relationships with all CMFG, CSG and commercial bank leadership to achieve client and organizational growth objectives, management and risk mitigation, including effective and proper collaboration with various shared services and support partners on behalf of the group, including owning the internal agreements between legal entities, establishing service level agreements, and streamlining support models to meet the agile needs of the CMF businesses (ie Marketing, Vendor Management, Technology support, etc.).

  • Champion the brand and be the voice of the customer; serve as an advocate for the customer and team; provide leadership, vision and innovation throughout all of operations and CMFG; promote the organization's values, encourage superior performance, and reward revenue growth and productivity through appropriate incentives.

  • Review and participate in the negotiation of credit documentation and closing proesses in consultation with legal counsel, the assigned RM/Banker, Underwriter/Portfolio Manager, other relevant internal partners and CMFG leadership

  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with internal colleagues, industry resources, peers and stakeholders. Collaborate effectively with stakeholders and leaders across multiple teams to achieve objectives. Establish and maintain influential relationships with senior leaders across CSG to facilitate strategic changes.

  • Properly reward team members financially through the approved incentive system, matching compensation with personal and group performance results.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • 10+ years of mortgage related lending operations experience

  • Proven ability to lead multi-level operational teams and business development efforts.

  • Demonstrated expertise in program management, strategic planning, organizational development, and project planning

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams

  • Comfort operating in ambiguity on complex, large-scale projects

  • Thrives in a fast-changing, fast paced environment with tight deadlines and the ability to multi-task and prioritize projects

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15+ years' experience managing in Mortgage Finance operations with deep subject matter expertise

  • Strong leadership abilities and the ability to drive change and influence others

  • Experience with the legal structures, documentation, surveillance practices for a variety of mortgage assets/facilities

  • Proven negotiation, collaboration and team building skills
