Position Description

The Center for STEM Learning is seeking a faculty fellow with a focus in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teaching and learning. This position is part of our continued commitment to enhance undergraduate STEM teaching and learning and the selected candidate will serve as an interim associate director of the Center for STEM Learning, housed in the new Jim & Thomas Duff Center for Science and Technology Innovation. This is a 12-month full-time appointment and will begin as soon as a suitable candidate is identified.

We seek a faculty member whose work demonstrates achievement and potential to improve undergraduate teaching and learning in the STEM disciplines. Reporting to the director of the Center for STEM Learning, the faculty fellow will focus on advancing learning and student success in STEM disciplines.

Major responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to host workshops focused on active learning pedagogies and collaborate with other campus stakeholders to develop student success metrics, improve recruitment and retention from underrepresented and economically marginalized communities, lead grant writing, and increase faculty collaboration. Additional duties will vary depending on the candidate’s experience and interest. There will be opportunities to collaborate with other faculty in ongoing projects, and to foster partnerships with external stakeholders.

Assignment Type: Tenure Track or Non-Tenure Track

1 year appointment with possible extension to 2 years

Minimum Qualifications

Current UM Faculty member.

Successful candidates should possess an advanced degree in a relevant field and demonstrate a record of teaching, research, or service accomplishments in STEM Education, or an overlapping and related discipline.

 

Candidates must demonstrate a record of external funding and/or improvements in undergraduate STEM education and must demonstrate ability to contribute to a climate of inclusion, to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and members of underrepresented groups in STEM, including those of low socioeconomic status and resource-limited and rural communities, and a commitment to excellent, inclusive teaching and service. Experience improving undergraduate learning for people who have been underrepresented in STEM undergraduate education is also preferred. (1) a cover letter that describes how the applicant’s work demonstrates potential to improve undergraduate learning, particularly for students from populations underrepresented in STEM undergraduate education. The letter should highlight past research and future plans in STEM undergraduate education, including research and grant writing accomplishments. The letter should also describe the applicant’s experience in instruction and mentoring of undergraduate students, including experiences or plans to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment for students
