Job Summary

The Reporter Host II is a professional who creates and covers news topics of importance to a 10-county region in Southwest Florida and produces local news reports/casts for digital, social, and broadcast platforms as host of the afternoon NPR news magazine, All Things Considered. The Reporter Host II reports to the Executive Producer of Content and works in close collaboration with the morning Reporter Host II to produce daily local news reports. Assignments will include day-of stories, enterprise packages, and hosting two-ways for multiple media distribution platforms including broadcast radio, web, social media, and emerging platforms.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Researches and develops news stories through ongoing inquiries with newsmakers and community figures on a local, state, national and international level.
  • Conducts interviews, records audio, reports and writes news stories in accordance with journalistic standards and ethics as defined by the Society of Professional Journalists and the Radio-Television News Directors Association.
  • Cultivates and maintains news sources.
  • Creates multi-platform treatments from stories whenever appropriate, including radio, television, and web.
  • Delivers breaking news during regular on-air shifts and hosts special programming.
  • Collaborates with colleagues on assignments and team projects to understand different perspectives and achieve department goals.

Other Duties
  • Participates in on-air fundraising campaigns and WGCU Public Media special events.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications
  • This position requires either eight years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Professional, full-time experience in broadcast news, public radio field reporting and interviewing.
  • Experience using a variety of technology, including studio and remote/field recording equipment, digital editing software, content management systems, social media, and project management platforms.
  • Superior on-air voice quality.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • Experience participating in on-air membership campaigns.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and guidelines established by professional organizations and/or governing agencies.
  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods, including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, verbal, and visual media.
  • Skilled in the use of journalism principles and techniques.
  • Network quality news writing, reporting, digital recording, and production skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
  • Skill in current digital audio editing, video desktop editing, and general desktop software applications including those that create original data journalism stories.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment where attention to detail and accuracy is key.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with a diverse group of staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build strategic relations with colleagues, coworkers, constituents, and the general public.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, organize and present information in a meaningful manner.
  • Ability to be comfortable using microphones, portable recording devices for audio, video and radio studio production equipment.
