Job purpose

The Senior Manager of Operations in the MOLAM Long Beach Office is responsible for vessel operations, marine safety, cargo operations and quality. The Individual is responsible for region-specific management such as close communication and coordination with business partners (customers, port authorities, regulatory bodies, agents, stevedores, towing companies and industry organizations), as well as relevant Tokyo Head Quarters departments for MOL’s Pure Car Carrier (PCC) fleet operating in the Americas Area Management Region on the Pacific Ocean*. Scope of Responsibility includes the management and supervision of subordinates in charge of Operations and Marine Quality/ Safety under supervision of GM of Area Operations & Contract Management and GM of Marine Quality & Safety Management.

* East of the International Date Line, from Alaska to the northbound passage of Panama Canal including the Hawaiian Islands, West Coast of Canada, Mexico and Central Americas.

Duties and responsibilities

● Conduct response to non-standard events including; marine accidents, weather, vessel movements/scheduling and providing maritime technical advice to subordinates.

● Support Corporate Office (Tokyo) Operations Department (WTFOP) decision-making for vessel operations. Including Ship Management Company support to ensure safe, efficient operations.

● Support Operational/Commercial teams in Corporate Office and MOLAM Area Management regarding; Monitoring, Collecting, Reporting and Disseminating industry information/intelligence concerning impacts to Labor, Regulatory Requirements and Marine Terminal efficiency.

● Direct Vendor Relationship Management, Contract Negotiations, Cost Management Procedures, and Corrective Actions with nominated vendors under supervision of GM of Area Operations & Contract Management.

● Collection of information related to safe ship operations in all navigation areas in the region (ports, shipping routes etc.).

● Supervision of maritime technical support when new vessels are entering and calling at ports in the area, including assessment of new port calls.

● Support compliance with laws, regulations, and local rules required in each country or area for vessel operation, cargo handling, and environmental compliance in the area management region.

● Periodic vessel visit attendance for supervision of; vessel operations, cargo safety checks, and coordination with related teams in Corporate Headquarters (CSV, WTFOP, CCA, SVG etc.).

● Supervision and performance management related to cargo handling accidents/prevention and countermeasures. Including coordination with related parties in Corporate Headquarters on quality improvement measures.

● Communication and support with area OEM’s port representatives.

● Marine technical support for Westbound cargo business.

● Support and promotion of EV safety transportation initiatives from the area (including communication and outreach to local OEMs with commercial team)

● Marine technical advice for loading plans, local port captains’ activities in the area.

● Contract management with regional Port Captains (Canada and Mexico) and supervision of cargo attendance schedules.

● Supervise planning and execution of special cargo handling operations, providing marine technical advice and commercial support.

● Manage freight survey results and supervision of responses as necessary.

● Support local quality audits of OEM’s.

● Accounting review and approval for Vendor Invoicing and Westbound Cargo Expenses.

● Accounting review for Speed Reduction/Port Charge Incentive and other rebates related vessel operation.

● Selection of new staff, planning and implementation of development plans as necessary under supervision of GM of Area Operations & Contract Management and GM of Marine Quality & Safety Management.

● Evaluation of existing staff, skill development, goal setting and implementation support.

● Management of National and Temporary staff.

● Communication and meeting participation with Regulatory, Industry Associations and Environmental Committees as necessary. Providing local information gathering to Corporate Headquarters.

● Participation in and advisory to the Car Carrier Fire Task Force at ports with local Fire Departments at each port.

● Participation in port-related events and networking.

● Creation of customer value through information sharing on new alternative ports and business development strategies.

● Ongoing research on LNG bunkering, etc. and other possible alternative fuel use locations in the region.

● Protect the MOL brand by presenting a positive image, cultivating and maintaining relationships within the maritime community.

Qualifications

● Graduate of Maritime Institution or similar specialized maritime technical education.

● Credentialed Seafarer as a Licensed Deck Officer on a commercial vessel (Car Carrier PCC/PCTC vessel experience is preferred).

● Minimum 5+ years of sea service experience is preferred.

● Ability to work weekends and travel domestically as well as internationally is required. Overnight travel up to 15-20%; volume is dependent on PCC business.

● Work experience demonstrating ability to multi-task, high level of verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and team-player outlook and capable of working in multicultural environment.

● Excellent judgment and decisiveness to protect company assets (human life, hull, and cargo) in the event of an emergency.

● Excellent ability to lead, train and manage subordinates.

● High level of coordination and management skills to ensure smooth communication with various related departments and external business partners.
