Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Participate in on-call coverage rotation
  • Lead engineering investigations to bring quicker issue resolution to support incidents impacting our customers and improve customer experience.
  • Build solutions, help create tools, help automate issue detection and diagnosis, to enable customers or support to self-resolve the issues.
  • Identify emerging trends or re-occurring escalation scenarios and drive engineering opportunities to mitigate and/or eliminate them from the workflow.
  • This can include a range of potential work item categories, such as self-healing mechanisms, self-serve, transparency, automation, and/or increasing the capabilities for Azure support.
  • Contribute to product improvements by filing impactful bugs, design change requests and helping developers to fix and ship them to production, preventing customers from being impacted.
  • Able to work well in challenging situations while exhibiting flexibility and ability tolerate and manage through ambiguity and uncertainty.
  • Receive escalated, technically complex mission critical or politically hot customer issues, and maintain ownership of issue until resolved completely.
  • Maintain strong working knowledge of products and report software bugs and customer product enhancements to the Product Group
  • The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of the competitive landscape and use this understanding to influence decision-makers in both support and the Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible server Engineering Groups.
  • Work directly with our Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible server Product Group to provide world-class engineering support at a product component level.
  • Perform complex product debugging and remediation when needed; working alongside the Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible server development teams to drive support incident resolution for configuration, code, or other service deficiencies impacting customers.


Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of Mandatory experience in administering PostgreSQL.
  • Basic Networking skills.
  • 3+ years of experience in Azure or other cloud computing providers.

Expertise in PostgreSQL Database:

  • Profound knowledge of PostgreSQL, including various versions (e.g., PostgreSQL 9.x, PostgreSQL 10.x, PostgreSQL 11.x, etc.).
  • Mastery of PostgreSQL's architecture, including understanding of its storage, query processing, and transaction management.

Database Administration:

  • o Proficiency in PostgreSQL database administration tasks, including database creation, configuration, and optimization.
  • o Expertise in managing database objects such as tables, views, indexes, and schemas.
  • Skill in data migration and data import/export operations.

Query Optimization and Performance Tuning:

  • Ability to optimize complex SQL queries for PostgreSQL, including query analysis and index optimization.
  • Experience in diagnosing and resolving performance issues, including query execution plans and resource utilization.
  • Expertise in designing and maintaining efficient indexes, including B-tree, GiST, GIN, and custom indexes.
  • Ability to choose the appropriate index types for specific use cases
  • Knowledge of data modeling best practices in PostgreSQL to design efficient schemas.
  • Ability to de-normalize and normalize data structures based on performance requirements.
  • Proficiency in monitoring PostgreSQL performance using tools like pg_stat_statements, pg_stat_activity, and EXPLAIN ANALYZE.
  • Experience in identifying and addressing performance issues proactively

Backup and Recovery:

  • Proficiency in setting up and managing PostgreSQL backup and recovery strategies, including full and incremental backups.
  • Knowledge of point-in-time recovery and disaster recovery planning.

Security and Permissions:

  • Strong understanding of PostgreSQL security features, including role-based access control (RBAC) and authentication methods.
  • Ability to implement security best practices and manage user privileges effectively.

High Availability and Replication:

  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL high availability solutions, such as streaming replication, logical replication, and failover mechanisms.
  • Experience in configuring and maintaining replication for data redundancy and failover.

Database Performance Monitoring:

  • Proficiency in monitoring and optimizing PostgreSQL performance using tools like pg_stat_statements, pg_stat_activity, and EXPLAIN ANALYZE.
  • Knowledge of performance tuning parameters and settings.
  • Basic Networking skills are required.

Scripting and Automation:

  • Ability to write scripts in languages like Bash, Python, or PL/pgSQL to automate routine PostgreSQL tasks, such as maintenance, monitoring, and data migrations.

Troubleshooting Skills:

  • Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve complex PostgreSQL database issues, including database corruption, data integrity problems, and connectivity issues.
  • Proficiency in analyzing PostgreSQL logs and error messages.

PostgreSQL Extensions and Advanced Features:

  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL extensions and advanced features, such as PostGIS for geospatial data, JSONB data types, and custom functions.
  • Experience in integrating and utilizing advanced features as needed.

Database Scaling and Sharding:

  • Knowledge of PostgreSQL scaling techniques, including table partitioning and sharding strategies.
  • Abiliy to design and implement scaling solutions for high-traffic environments.

Linux Operating System Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems, as PostgreSQL is often deployed on Linux servers.
  • Proficiency in basic Linux command-line operations and system administration.
  • Familiarity with development: tools, language, process, methods, troubleshooting
  • Experience with JSON, Markdown Language, Azure DevOps is a plus

Development/Coding (Optional)

  • Experience with C#, JAVA, .NET, PowerShell, CLI, Client Azure SQL is a preferred
  • Service engineering and/or DevOps experience at internet scale involving user data and/or software development for an enterprise level product
  • Superior problem solving and troubleshooting skills, an ability to use various data collection tools and methodologies to analyze problems and develop solutions


Preferred:

  • Experience in a Tier 2/3 environment is preferred
  • BS in computer science or engineering or equivalent industry experience is preferred.
