Location: Bethesda, MD (Onsite at NHLBI, 6705 Rockledge Dr)
Job Type: Full-Time (30-40 hours per week)
Education: Master’s degree required
Job Summary:
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) seeks a highly skilled Scientific and Technical Writer to support its communication efforts. This role focuses on producing clear, accurate, and impactful scientific and technical materials tailored to diverse audiences. The ideal candidate has expertise in health, research, or scientific communications, and excels in project management and collaborative teamwork.
Key Responsibilities:
Content Creation
- Research, write, and edit scientific and technical materials, including journal articles, reports, blog posts, and presentations.
- Develop plain-language materials such as brochures, factsheets, and workshop summaries.
- Prepare policy papers, briefing documents, and technical summaries for various stakeholders.
Data Review and Reporting
- Conduct advanced literature reviews and summarize findings in reports and presentations.
- Assist in developing and editing official program management reports and correspondence.
- Maintain and utilize databases like REPORTER and IMPAC II for data management and reporting.
Document Finalization and Review
- Proofread documents for scientific accuracy and completeness.
- Synthesize feedback to improve drafts and prepare final materials for publication.
Strategic Communication Guidance
- Advise researchers and staff on communication strategies, content types, and templates.
- Provide expert advice on outreach and publication programs to enhance communication impact.
Mentorship and Development
- Mentor staff on scientific and technical writing best practices.
- Identify external training opportunities and share best practices for high-quality writing.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Education: Master’s degree in Communications or a related field.
- Experience: Proven track record in scientific or technical writing, with special emphasis on health, research, or science communication.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong project management and organizational abilities.
- Ability to interact effectively with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
- Familiarity with operational planning and strategy development.
- Knowledge of scientific, research, and health-related fields.
- Technical Knowledge: Experience with scientific literature databases and tools (e.g., PubMed, Reference Manager).
