Position Summary

As the Bereavement Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator, you will be responsible for modeling the 3 Company values of Compassion, Integrity, and Excellence, and for promoting the Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the Program, between the Program and other Company departments, and between the Program and all external stakeholders. The Bereavement Coordinator is a hospice-trained interdisciplinary team member who oversees an organized program to ensure grief counseling for the bereaved. S/he is responsible to develop and deliver a program of bereavement support and counseling that is available to patients during their hospice care and to the bereaved family members of patients for at least 1 year after the death of the patient. S/he is responsible for applying the rules and regulations of state and federal regulatory agencies and other certified agencies.

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, training, supervising, and retaining volunteers and volunteer coordinators to adequately support volunteer operations and to ensure compliance with corporate, state, and federal regulations. He/she will ensure the coordination of patient and family needs for volunteer services and will oversee the development of and implementation of the plans of care to meet those needs. S/he is responsible for applying the rules and regulations of state and federal regulatory agencies and other certified agencies.

Principal Accountabilities - Bereavement Coordinator

Participates as a member of the IDT, including development and implementation of the plan of care.Works with the hospice Social Worker in the completion and analysis of the pre-bereavement risk assessment and care plan development for the patient and the family.Promotes and supports assessment of bereavement risk factors at admission and throughout the hospice patient’s care.Develops and implements the bereavement plan of care after the death of the patient.Identifies the needs of non-family caregivers, including staff and residents at nursing facilities where the patient may have resided, and ensures bereavement support for them.Assists in identifying the need for intervention of other IDT members.Effectively communicates patient and family needs to IDT.Provides education about bereavement services to members of the IDT.Recognizes issues or concerns and escalates appropriately.Prepares reports, in-services, and other documents to demonstrate the value and effectiveness of the bereavement program as requested.Delivers high quality bereavement support, either with internal resources or through outreach to community resources when needed.Develops, organizes and delivers grief support groups either independently or in association with other grief support resources in the community.Maintains a resource library of materials appropriate to various bereaved individuals, including those with high-risk or disenfranchised grief – provides materials as part of routine bereavement contacts and upon request.Documents care and services provided according to state and/or federal requirements.Attends and participates in community events, promoting Compassus and the universal need for grief and bereavement support.Develops and performs public service announcements regarding grief and bereavement.Provides bereavement counseling and support, based on personal qualifications, when needed.Develops and delivers memorial services for program patients.Develops and supports delivery of memorial services for patients of nursing facilities served by the program.Participates in funeral or other memorial services if requested by family.Works with all members of the hospice team to promote Compassus in the community.Leverages community events, professional contacts and volunteer network to promote Compassus and hospice.Manages expenses of bereavement program.

Principal Accountabilities - Volunteer Coordinator

Participates as a member of the IDT, including development and implementation of the plan of care.Promotes the use of volunteers as an intervention to support patient care needs.Actively recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and retains volunteers to support the administrative and patient care needs of the program and CompassusAdheres to common human resource policies in recruitment and selection processes.Ensures prospective volunteers are interviewed and complete all mandated background and health screenings prior to being offered a position as a volunteer.Performs initial and ongoing competency evaluations to verify training and support needs.Maintains records of all recruitment and retention activities.Maintains accurate record of volunteer utilization as a percentage of overall patient care hours as mandated by regulations.Assists in identifying the need for intervention of other IDT members.Effectively communicates patient and family needs to IDT.Provides education about volunteer services and role of the volunteer to members of the IDT.Recognizes issues or concerns and escalates appropriately.Prepares reports, in-services, and other documents to demonstrate the value and effectiveness of the volunteer program as requested.Utilizes a variety of means to communicate with and retain active volunteers, which may include:NewslettersEmail campaignsGatherings/ celebratory eventsMeetingsDelivers high quality training for new volunteers.Delivers at least 4 in-services per year for active volunteers.Manages volunteer services through accountable awareness of volunteer utilization, documentation and plan of care involvement.Assigns patient care and administrative volunteers, providing oversight for activity and documentation requirements.Attends and participates in community events, promoting Compassus as a place to volunteer.Develops and performs public service announcements regarding hospice volunteerism.Promotes hospice philosophy and the integral role of volunteers to support patients.Performs the role of the patient care volunteer when needed to support plan of care interventions.Leverages community events, professional contacts and volunteer network to promote Compassus and hospice.Manages expenses of volunteer program.Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities - Volunteer Coordinator

Directly supervises volunteers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies, procedures and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training volunteers; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining volunteers; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience

Minimum high school diploma required. Bachelors’ or higher degree in counseling, social work, psychology, theology, divinity, or equivalent field strongly preferred. Minimum of 2 years of experience in the provision of grief, loss and/or bereavement support for individuals and families required. Equivalent combination of specialized training, education and experience will be considered.

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field such as theology of education, psychology, or counseling, ANDCompleted 8 additional hours in death, dying, grief, or bereavement. 

Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. College degree preferred. Experience in Social Services, Human Services, Resource Management or related field is helpful; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience managing volunteer services or non-profit organization is a plus.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leaders, colleagues, investors, and external parties. Strong written and verbal communications and teaching skills with presentation experience.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software. Previous experience in use of an electronic medical record is helpful.

Other Qualifications

Strong organizational and time management skills. Must be able to work a flexible schedule to include nights and weekends. Creativity in preparing and making presentations. Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends. Ability to provide own transportation. Clinical experience or training related to death, dying, and bereavement. Must be of high integrity including maintenance of confidential information including all patient records. Must be able to provide grief counseling to families and others in need.

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

A valid driver’s license and auto liability insurance.

Other Skills and Abilities

Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English. Articulates and embraces hospice philosophy.
