Job Summary

The Accountant is responsible for exercising discretion and independent judgment in regard to the monthly accurate calculation and timely payment to Insurance Producers. This position will also be cross-trained to provide back-up to the Manager-Producer Commissions.

What You’ll Do:

Review producer compensation/commission arrangements, draw assignments and promissory notes, with guidance from the Legal department. Establish new producers in agency system, etc. Generate commission statements, audit for accuracy, validate, apply expense deductions, and pay active, prior, outside Insurance Producer timely. Must be flexible with personal schedule at month-end processing and directly following payment dates, as well as year-end tasks. Independently use accounting experience and training to analyze and interpret data and or underlying transactions to determine proper accounting treatment. Analyze and interpret general ledger activity to identify root cause issues or explanations, for use with budget variance commentary or other inquiries by accounting or operations management. Assist with ad hoc projects as requested by management. Contribute to the development of accounting procedures by reviewing current processes and making recommendations for process improvements and best practices to improve individual, team, and organizational effectiveness. Assist with approved projects as needed. Monitor individual performance to ensure productivity, efficiency, quality, adherence to deadlines and service standards are met, taking corrective actions when required or properly communicating roadblocks or delays to management. Demonstrate a strong work ethic, positive attitude and willingness to assist others at all times. Serve as a back-up for critical daily processes as needed, covering for others in their absence and ensuring overall team service and performance excellence. Develop and maintain positive, productive relationships with IOA leadership, peers, co-workers, teammates, and employees. Must be professional and have courteous customer service skills under pressure. Required to regard all accounting and payroll information as highly confidential. Requires someone with initiative, desire to learn, and develop productive relationships with producers and employees. Continue to improve professional skills by actively participating in internal/external development opportunities. Live and champion IOA core values at all times, demonstrating the highest levels of personal character, integrity, and servant leadership. Comply with all company work rules, standards, and policies and procedures at all times.

What We’re Looking For:

One of the following experience options is desired: (1) bachelor’s degree in business administration with accounting major and three (3) years of accounting experience. (2) An Associates of Accounting and five (5) years of accounting experience. (3) Bookkeeper with 7 years of accounting experience.

Experience in the insurance industry is preferred.

Experience with Applied – Epic (agency management system/general ledger/commission policies & statements) is strongly preferred.

Ability to analyze and problem solve complex issues

Outstanding verbal and written communication skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft suite of products. Advance Excel skills required.

Ability to listen, communicate, and follow-up effectively with employees, producers, managers, and executives

Must have these attributes to be successful in the position: excellent time management skills, ability to prioritize workload, work independently, self-starter, inquisitive, team player, handle responsibility of highly confidential information, detailed oriented, accurate, meet deadlines and remain calm under pressure.
