Job Summary

Reporting to the full-time Coordinator for Latinx students, and under the direction of the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA) mission and vision, the part-time Multicultural Student Success Coordinator (MSSC) will help serve the diverse needs of Latinx/Hispanic students. They will assist in efforts to advance an inclusive and engaging learning environment for historically underrepresented students, with an emphasis on Latinx/Hispanic students. This MSSC will provide culturally appropriate support including addressing personal, social, or academic concerns, and offering guidance as needed. They will seek to proactively help students navigate any roadblock they may encounter on their path to graduation. They will be responsible for student leadership development and engagement, multicultural educational programming, and finally organizational and fiscal management. In addition, they will promote innovative ideas on how to reach and engage with underrepresented students, serve as a multicultural representative in departmental and institutional inclusivity efforts; collaborate with various SLCC departments, faculty, administrators, and staff to create and maintain programs relevant to multicultural student access, retention, and graduation. They will also review and share current research in higher education related to the access, retention and persistence of students of color and other underserved populations with an emphasis on the Latinx/o/a student population. Lastly, the coordinator will maintain paper and electronic student files, ensure confidentiality of student records, help with analysis and reports that support the goals of ODMA and Salt Lake Community college and make appropriate referrals to counseling, academic advising, and other campus or community resources. Essential Responsibilities and Duties Serve as a mentor, advocate, and resource for multicultural students Assist students in developing student success action plans in individual meetings Coordinate and collaborate with departments/offices across the institution and community partners to identify resources that respond to multicultural students’ social, economic, and education needs through motivational and educational activities, workshops, programs, and conferences  Provide the campus community with opportunities to learn about and discuss social issues that focus on diversity, equity, social justice, and inclusion, with the goal of expanding multicultural awareness and responsiveness Work closely with supervisor to contribute to college-wide committees, task forces, and other specific initiatives related to diversity, inclusivity, multicultural student retention, and success  Support current programs relevant to multicultural student access, retention, and graduation Collect quantitative and qualitative data on how underrepresented students progress and interact with SLCC’s campus climate Evaluate and identify trends, recommendations, or areas of improvement in the delivery of services to students Keep abreast of best practices to enhance the persistence, retention, and success of multicultural students Connect with Latinx/Hispanic agencies and organizations to cultivate partnership that support multicultural student access, retention, and success Other duties as assigned Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications To be considered for this position, all candidates must: Have a bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, educational psychology, sociology, communications, ethnic studies, or another related field. Two-to-four years of full-time, direct paid professional experience. Candidates can trade education for experience at a 2:1 ratio (i.e., 2 years of post-baccalaureate education for 1 year of full-time experience). Part-time experience may be substituted on a prorated basis. Preferred Qualifications Preference will go to candidates who have: A master’s degree in a related field. The ability to communicate in Spanish and a keen awareness of the Hispanic or Latino/a/x student experience. Experience working in higher education, particularly in two-year Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Communicate effectively (in writing and verbally) with individuals with diverse cultures, cultural backgrounds and abilities  Provide excellent customer service during in-person and virtual one-on-one student meetings Work collaboratively with others in the ODMA team, as well as our campus and community partners and possess strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills  Determine the needs of underrepresented students and connect students to interventions or services to meet those needs and advocate for all students with an emphasis on Hispanic/Latinx students Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite Be detail-oriented and have the ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments, and carry projects to completion Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties
