Job Summary

Providing consistent reading support and engaging mentorship can have an immense impact on the life of a young person who is struggling with reading. You can become a part of their literacy journey and earn your federal work study award through the America Reads program through the Thayne Center.

America Reads Tutors work with elementary aged children on a one-on-one or small group basis to build their literacy skills at one of our partner sites. Partner site will be Esperanza Elementary and the role will be in both English and Spanish.

The Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership, and Community Engagement provides a supportive and inclusive office for students to explore community involvement, leadership, and volunteerism. By providing opportunities in conjunction with local nonprofits we cultivate an environment to test our student’s interests and area of study while assisting them to realize they have the knowledge and skills to affect positive change in our community.

Tutors work at the partner site for 4-20 hours per week, receiving a schedule from the partner about which students will benefit most from consistent motivation and support. During their time at the partner site, tutors will build a mentoring relationship with the students and share their passion for reading and education. In this program, the tutor will get direct experience working with students, practicing customer service skills, learning about the education system, and working in a fast paced environment.

This posting may hire for multiple positions at multiple locations. Essential Responsibilities and Duties Specific tasks vary by partner site, but in general, tutors will perform the following duties:

Attend an orientation session about the expectations of an America Reads tutor. Develop, teach, and adapt short lesson plan for children at the partner site. Read with students and be read to by students. Serve as a mentor and positive role model to younger students. Assist students with homework. Engage students in learning and literacy enrichment activities. Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Maintain excellent communication with the Coordinator for Student Community Leadership and the partner site. Reflect on their tutoring experience through trainings and written prompts. Attend 2 trainings per semester offered by the America Reads program. Minimum Qualifications Must have an SLCC Federal work-study award through SLCC’s Financial Aid office. Must be able to earn a Work Study award. Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester Must work at least 4 hours and no more than 20 a week during the semester Must be comfortable talking with students, staff, and faculty. Must have basic computer skills. Tutors may create their own work schedules within available tutoring hours at their school sites. Must commit to attending an orientation at the outset, as well as 2 trainings per semester. Must be able to leave campus and access the partner site using their preferred transportation method. Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching others or tutoring. Experience working with elementary aged students. Awareness of or interest in indigenous gardening practices, sustainability or related issues in food production. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to read, write and speak well in English, bilingual skills a plus Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. Desire to work with elementary age students from diverse backgrounds and experiences Serve as a positive role model and mentor. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
