Overview

The Trauma Nurse Practitioner (TNP) will assist in comprehensive medical, neurosurgery, general surgical and critical care of Trauma and Surgical patients requiring hospitalization. The Trauma NP has specialized skill and knowledge related to the unique ICU setting in which s/he practices and performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, and provides direct patient care services in the Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Progressive Care, and medical floors. As a provider, s/he plans, implements and evaluates care that is consistent from admission to post-discharge. The Trauma NP will participate in all aspect of patient care for trauma patients. Additionally, the Trauma Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) collaborates with Trauma department in activities for education and performance improvement.

Responsibilities

Patient Care

Responsible for the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of trauma patients in collaboration with Trauma Attending. erves as a liaison or point person for nursing staff, medical staff, social services, therapies and other hospital departments regarding the management of patients. Provides care and consults with other medical team members. Diagnosis and manages patients with acute, critical or chronic illnesses and injuries. Facilitates disposition of trauma service patients by coordinating care with ancillary services, patient, and family. Performs proceduresthat are within the advanced scope of nurse practitioner practice. Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic data and communicates results to appropriate providers. Serves as a patient advocate. Manages medications, IVs and blood products: including prescribing and dispensing. Develops and implements a treatment plan for acute illness and trauma management in collaboration with the attending trauma surgeon. Prioritizes and problem solves to meet changes in patient status/condition. Documents interventions and the response to interventions.

 
Documentation

Documents diagnosis, assessments and interventions in EMR systems. Completes daily progress notes on trauma service patients. Completes discharge summaries. Performs and documents tertiary patient assessment on all trauma service admissions within 24 hours. Performs daily rounding on all tertiary patients who are unable to participates on on-going exams.

Communications

Communicates with the nursing staff, medical staff, social service, and other hospital departments regarding the management of trauma service patients. Collaborates with rounding trauma attending daily. Meets daily with on-call trauma surgeon for patient care report.


Compliance/Safety

Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner. Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility. If required for the position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates. Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training in the specified time frame. Demonstrates and utilizes the guidelines of care and practice via the nursing process and in accordance with Arizona State Board of Nursing Laws and Regulations. Maintains professional competence through supervision, continuing education and other relevant learning experiences.

Qualifications

Education
Master's Degree Nursing- Required

Graduate MS from an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program with board certification in acute care- Required

Certification & Licensures
Current unrestricted Arizona license as APRN- Required

ACLS - Required

Furnishing certificate- Required

Fingerprint Clearance Card application number- Required upon hire
Fingerprint Clearance Card- Required within 90 days of hire
CCRN, CEN or TNS- Preferred
2 years intensive care unit experience preferred as an ICU RN

Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for the roles assigned by their departmental leader.
