Job Summary

The Director of Teaching Excellence is pivotal in improving teaching and learning across the college. They lead faculty development, collaborate among departments, and liaise with the North Carolina Community College System Office for distance learning. Additionally, they ensure effective communication with the information technology division regarding software, hardware, maintenance, and security of the College’s student learning management system. The director provides leadership for the Centers of Teaching Innovation and Emerging Technologies, guiding faculty toward enhancing student learning outcomes aligned with the College’s mission and core values. They will also teach at least one course annually in their academic discipline.

Salary will commensurate with experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and realize a quality professional development program for faculty to enhance teaching and learning and promote student success and completion.  Deliver comprehensive programming and training for faculty in course design, the learning management system, instructional technology, and best practices to enhance learning environments. Remain updated about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), applying both to confirm instructional materials are accessible. Promote inclusive learning environments through frameworks like Culturally Responsive Teaching, Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT), and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).  Design, implement, and oversee the College's faculty mentoring program.  Utilize data analytics to evaluate teaching excellence initiatives, ensuring their direct impact on instructional and student learning outcomes.  Collaborate with deans, program, and department chairs to observe and improve the learning environment, enhancing instructor performance and student success.  Provide administrative oversight for the College's learning management system and online teaching applications.  Contribute to institutional effectiveness processes, including program review, course outcome assessment, and regional accreditation. Manage the assigned departmental budget, plan resource allocation, and suggest staffing needs.  Evaluate and recommend innovative teaching tools and emerging technologies. Plan and deliver accessible, high-quality instruction that enhances learning and promotes students’ understanding of course outcomes. Instruct at least one course annually, in either curriculum, non-curriculum, or business and industry, or teach a reduced teaching load approved by the Vice President for Learning.; prepare objectives, assignments, assessments, instructional and supplemental materials, grading standards, and attendance policies; develop, maintain, and refresh course syllabi; ensure the learning experiences align with program and student learning outcomes for the course. Create an inclusive learning environment and ensure equitable access to education. Ensure availability for all students by maintaining established student support hours, offering availability by appointment, and responding to electronic communications appropriately and promptly.  Maintain, complete, and submit accurate and timely course documentation of student attendance and grades as indicated by institutional policy and procedures. Facilitate students’ understanding of the importance of personal and career-oriented soft (durable) skills and their essential role in achieving success in life, college, and the workplace. Champion the College’s retention, progression, completion, and inclusion initiatives, ensuring social and economic success for all learners.  Support the College’s mission, vision, and core values by adhering to all policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Related Responsibilities:
Collaborate with the Office of Marketing and Communication to update the Teaching Excellence, Distance Learning, and NC SARA webpages. Participate in college-wide, divisional, and departmental meetings; contribute to advisory, standing, and ad hoc committees and focus groups to formulate educational pathways, courses, policies, and procedures recommendations.  Assist with the inventory management of departmental equipment and assume responsibility for the Centers for Teaching Innovation and Emerging Technologies. Pursue and participate in professional development activities each academic year, including required and recommended employee training offered by the College. Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Learning.

Education and Experience Requirements:
Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a curriculum subject area, instructional technology, education technology, instructional design, or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university. At least three years of teaching experience, including online instruction using video conferencing tools like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Collaborate, etc. At least three years of experience using a Learning Management System (LMS) like OpenLMS, Moodle, Blackboard, Bightspace/D2L, etc. At least two years of experience designing professional development and training covering instructional design, course assessment, accessibility, inclusion, and emerging technologies.  
Preferred Education and Requirements:
At least three years of community college teaching experience. At least two years of experience as an LMS administrator, preferably OpenLMS or Moodle. At least one year of experience working the Ellucian Self-Service Student Portal or another similar student registration portal. At least one year of experience using Watermark Student Success and Engagement (Aviso Enterprise) or similar student success software.p Completion of the Applying the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric and Peer Reviewer courses, the QM Teaching Online Certificate, the QM Coordinator Training Certification, and/or other course development, teaching practices, or assurance certifications. Experience working with Watermark’s Planning & Self-Study, Faculty Success, Curriculum Strategy, Course Evaluation & Surveys, and Student Success & Engagement. Experience with regional higher education accrediting agencies, focusing on enhancing student learning outcomes and teaching excellence.
