The RTI International seeks a prospect for the Research Assistant Internship within the Discovery Sciences (DS) unit.
Center for Drug Discovery Lab works to understand and develop treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders, including substance use disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder. To this end, we use novel tools to measure neural activity in rodents engaged in behavioral tasks.
The intern will support a project focused on the contribution of neuronal mitochondria to substance use disorders. The lab will use a variety of pharmacological tools in combination with viral and genetic approaches for manipulating and monitoring neural activity in behaving mice.
Learning Objectives:
Design behavioral pharmacology experiments Develop experimental skills for optogenetic experiments Develop strategies for interpreting literature and broader experimental outcomes Develop oral presentation and science communication skills Identify and assess career paths in neuroscienceResponsibilities
Distinguish strategies for applying viral and optogenetic techniques Perform animal care, injections, and perfusions Assist with rodent stereotaxic surgery Analyze data and create graphs Present and interpret data and journal articles in lab meeting
RTI's Internship Program emphasizes experiential and mentored learning experiences, providing students and recent degree recipients an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and skills in a meaningful and practical way. Additional Information
This in-person academic credit with stipend internship will take place from August 2024 through May 2025. The internship requires a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week. Hours are flexible during business hours, Monday through Friday.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Currently enrolled (advanced) undergraduate or graduate student, studying one of the following fields: Neuroscience, Psychology, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmacology, Chemistry. Eligible to receive academic credit or fulfill a program requirement (documentation required) Demonstrated knowledge of or familiarity with quantitative research methodologies. Demonstrated leadership and time management skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.Preferred Qualifications
