Summary

Michigan Engineering is looking for a collaborative, enthusiastic, and well-organized team member who desires a role to contribute to Michigan Engineering's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), research and sponsored programs goals. You will play an important role on the Culture, Grants and Advancement team within the Office of Culture, Community and Equity (OCCE) at Michigan Engineering. The Culture, Grants and Advancement team is responsible for research grant consultations with faculty, DEI professional development for faculty and staff, and different initiatives related to Michigan Engineering's DEI 2.0 strategic plan.

You will join OCCE to help enact and maintain measures that promote DEI within Michigan Engineering's research agenda and support faculty as they apply for competitive research and foundation grants. Reporting to the Program Director for Culture, Grants and Advancement, the Broader Impacts Grants Consultant is a DEI content-area specialist with broad knowledge of the research and grant application process in higher education. Their primary function is to consult on DEI-related sections of the pre-proposal, proposal and site visit stages of research grants. Such sections include broader impacts, broadening participation, mentorship, educational outreach and culture of inclusion plans. The Broader Impacts Grants Consultant will work in partnership with Michigan Engineering Associate Dean of Research's Research Development team and members of Michigan Engineering Corporate and Foundation Relations team.

Responsibilities*

Build relationships and maintain regular contact with prospective grantees to support the success of their projects, and facilitate problem-solving as necessary Provide initial in-take consultations with faculty and research administrators Provide ideas, resources (e.g., K-12 programs), and referrals to other units (e.g., CEDER, Ginsberg Center) as appropriate Write feedback on DEI-specific sections of research grant proposals Function as the Grants/Proposal Writer for the various internal initiatives to address diversity, equity and inclusion and support the Program Director in grant discovery for OCCE programs Identify and develop sponsored and corporate foundation grant proposals to support OCCE's K-20 programs Make recommendations to the Program Director and Executive Director of Culture, Community and Equity as to the extent of involvement needed on research grant proposals Develop and facilitate workshops, panels, or discussions to educate faculty on DEI-specific sections of research grant proposals, such as broader impacts and broadening participation or other DEI topics needed for faculty development and support Attend and give feedback on research grant proposal site visit dress rehearsals, and provide additional information to grant program officers at the direction of the Program Director and Executive Director of Culture, Community and Equity Oversee and/or coordinate the collection, compilation, and analysis of tracking and progress reports Work in partnership with the Program Director on strategy, evaluation metrics, progress report review, and creating a thoughtful narrative for different audiences around this body of work Perform miscellaneous job-related tasks, as required

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree required with 3 or more years of experience in business, STEM fields, English/communications, non-profits or higher education. A combination of education and experience may be considered Experience writing clear, compelling argumentation for professional audiences Experience giving clear, helpful feedback on writing to subject matter experts Experience with effectively and efficiently developing and executing several key projects while simultaneously and continually setting priorities on emerging requirements and changing timelines Strong problem-solving skills, including the demonstrated ability to synthesize ideas, anticipate next steps and prioritize important decisions Familiarity with the research process in higher education Familiarity with research grant requirements, expectations and processes Skills in fostering new relationships, marshaling professional networks, and strategic planning Proven commitment to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion Experience with designing and facilitating workshops, panels, discussions or similar programming

Work Locations

The Michigan Engineering Office of Culture, Community and Equity operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. This position will be classified as a FLEX position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means working on campus 2-3 days per week, depending on the time of year, and working remotely the rest of the week.
