Position Summary
The Kitchen Manager oversees all daily kitchen operations, ensuring excellence in food quality, safety, cleanliness, and team performance. This role combines hands-on leadership, organization, and creativity to support a menu that evolves from daytime cafe fare to evening small plates. The Kitchen Manager ensures efficient service, cost control, and consistency maintaining Barrel House s high standards while fostering a positive, team-oriented kitchen culture.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Staff Management
- Supervise, train, and schedule all kitchen staff, including cooks, prep staff, and dishwashers.
- Promote teamwork, clear communication, and a positive work environment.
- Conduct regular team meetings and performance evaluations.
- Support staff development through mentorship, training, and feedback.
- Ensure coverage and smooth operation across all shifts.
Food Preparation & Quality Control
- Oversee all aspects of food preparation and presentation to meet Barrel House s culinary standards.
- Ensure consistency in portion sizes, flavor, and presentation across all menu items.
- Collaborate with management on menu updates, specials, and seasonal offerings.
- Monitor and adjust kitchen workflows to ensure timely service and quality.
- Maintain high standards for both cafe daytime offerings and evening bar menu.
Inventory, Ordering & Cost Control
- Manage ordering, receiving, and storage of food and supplies.
- Track inventory levels to minimize waste and prevent shortages.
- Maintain accurate records of food costs, waste, and vendor performance.
- Work closely with management to meet food and labor cost targets.
- Implement systems to ensure efficient use of ingredients and supplies.
Health, Safety & Sanitation
- Ensure all food handling, preparation, and storage complies with DC health and safety regulations.
- Conduct regular cleaning inspections and maintain sanitation checklists.
- Oversee proper labeling, dating, and storage procedures.
- Ensure all kitchen staff follow ServSafe and hygiene standards.
- Report and address maintenance or safety issues promptly.
Operations & Communication
- Partner with management to plan and execute private events and special functions.
- Coordinate with the front-of-house team to ensure smooth service and communication.
- Assist in developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Support the development of new systems or processes to improve kitchen efficiency.
- Perform additional or related tasks as assigned by management.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Kitchen Manager, Head Chef, or similar leadership role.
- Strong culinary background with an emphasis on quality, consistency, and presentation.
- Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of cost control, inventory management, and food safety standards.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving cafe/bar environment.
- ServSafe Certification or equivalent (preferred).
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Work Environment
- Fast-paced environment requiring focus and adaptability.
- Standing for extended periods and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Collaboration with both cafe and bar teams to ensure cohesive service and menu execution.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary based on experience, $50,000-60,000.
