College Board - Advanced Placement & Instruction (AP&I)
Location: This is a fully remote role. Candidates who live near CB offices have the option of being fully remote or hybrid (Tuesday and Wednesday in office).
Role Type:
- This is a full-time position.
About the Team
The AP Curriculum and Assessment (AP C&A) team at College Board (110+ staff) collaborates with colleagues across all aspects of the AP Program to develop, manage, and deliver AP's 40+ courses in a wide variety of subject areas. AP is a rigorous academic program built on the commitment, passion, and hard work of students and educators from secondary schools and higher education. AP provides willing and academically prepared high school students with the opportunity to study and learn at the college level. Within AP C&A, the AP Assessment team is a cross-functional group of professionals with deep expertise in academic content, systems, project management, and content knowledge management. This team provides critical support to AP C&A course teams in the design, delivery, and scoring of AP Exams.
About the Opportunity
As the Senior Director of AP Reader Training, you will serve as a key leader within both the AP Assessment and AP C&A teams in leading the end-to-end strategy, design, development, and implementation of all constructed response training for the AP Program. Your primary focus will be to ensure accurate and reliable scoring through high-quality, accessible, and instructionally sound learning experiences for all stakeholders involved in the annual AP Reading—including AP Readers, Chief Readers, scoring leadership, and AP C&A assessment content teams.
You will oversee the creation and delivery of training assets for digital, digital-hybrid, and print constructed response questions across all 40+ AP courses, ensuring alignment with learning science principles, assessment best practices, AP course frameworks, and task models. This role requires the management of complex project timelines, cross-functional stakeholder collaboration, learning management system (LMS) deployment, and ongoing refinement of training materials to meet the evolving needs of the AP Reading.
In close collaboration with AP C&A content teams, AP Delivery and Scoring partners, and external vendors, you will lead the development and deployment of all Reader training content related to constructed response scoring. Additionally, you will provide technical learning design expertise and execution support for broader AP assessment learning initiatives and professional learning programs for AP C&A assessment content teams. Through your strategic mindset, collaborative approach, technical expertise, and strong organization and communication skills, you will drive the continuous improvement of the AP Reader training and ensure the accuracy, reliability, and success of AP free-response scoring.
In this role, you will:
Reader Training (60%)
Spearhead the strategic vision and continuous evolution of AP Reader and leader training programs across 40+ AP subjects.
Champion the integration of cutting-edge learning science, instructional innovation, and accessibility frameworks into training design.
Architect comprehensive digital and print solutions to support scoring processes, ensuring alignment with AP standards and subject-specific nuances.
Orchestrate just-in-time learning experiences that enhance readiness and performance across the AP Reader workforce.
Forge strong cross-functional partnerships with academic and operational leaders to align training initiatives with scoring goals and timelines.
Steer collaboration with internal teams and external vendors to uphold quality, coherence, and fidelity in training asset development.
Cultivate internal capabilities by designing and delivering knowledge-building programs for AP content development teams.
Elevate scoring leadership excellence through impactful professional development engagements in partnership with delivery and scoring stakeholders.
Oversee the strategic deployment and management of learning assets within enterprise platforms to ensure operational readiness.
Guarantee compliance with technical and accessibility standards, driving inclusive training experiences through robust production processes.
Reader Training Innovation and Improvement (15%)
Strategize and oversee project lifecycles by defining timelines, optimizing content review workflows, and implementing proactive risk management to ensure seamless execution of training initiatives.
Architect data visualization frameworks and executive dashboards (e.g., Smartsheet, Power BI) to enable real-time insights and strategic decision-making on training performance.
Establish enterprise-level measurement systems to assess training quality and effectiveness, delivering annual impact reports to inform continuous improvement and organizational learning.
Envision and lead a multi-year innovation roadmap for AP Reader training, leveraging learning science, assessment best practices, and enterprise AI to drive transformative improvements and operational efficiencies.
Reading Onsite Management (15%)
Lead on-site execution and operational support for AP C&A facilitated AP Reading events (Sessions I & II), including pre-reading, extended, and late scoring periods, ensuring seamless delivery and adherence to program goals.
Mitigate operational risks by serving as the primary liaison for assessment content teams and AP C&A leadership, proactively communicating progress, escalating issues, and resolving challenges in real time.
Represent AP C&A Assessment leadership as the principal on-site contact for vendor coordination and issue resolution throughout the AP Reading experience.
Assessment Learning Design and eContent Development (10%)
Deliver scalable learning solutions by developing high-quality content and eLearning assets that align with SCORM and accessibility standards, enabling consistent training for AP C&A content teams.
Partner with the Senior Director of AP C&A Professional Learning to shape instructional strategies and design impactful assessment and professional learning experiences for internal teams.
Craft strategic communications and design enhancements for AP Reader training updates and AP C&A's My Hub SharePoint presence, driving clarity, engagement, and accessibility of critical information.
About You
7+ years of professional experience in educational assessment training, instructional design, or related learning development within assessment contexts along with a master's degree
Extensive knowledge of the AP Program or similar programs, assessment design principles, and scoring methodologies, including expertise in free-response item writing, rubric development, and task model creation.
Proven expertise in learning design science and tools, including LMS platforms, video/audio production software, digital content development, and accessibility compliance for training materials.
Skilled in designing targeted training programs, diagnosing learning gaps, and measuring learner progress and training effectiveness.
Exceptional organizational and project management abilities; adept at managing multiple deadlines and leading high-stakes, cross-functional initiatives in deadline-driven environments.
Strong communication, presentation, and facilitation skills across diverse stakeholder groups.
Technically proficient in project management platforms and tools, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Smartsheet (being certified is preferred but candidates without certification must demonstrate a willingness to obtain it on the job), SharePoint, Power BI, and LMS/eLearning tools such as Articulate, Rise360, and SCORM-compliant systems.
High level of technical fluency, with the ability to quickly adopt new tools and platforms and a strong interest in leveraging automation and enterprise AI for improved efficiency and effectiveness.
Willingness and ability to travel 6–8 times per year, including 3–4 consecutive weeks during May–June to support annual AP Reading operations.
