  1. Obtain or Be Willing to Obtain a PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number)

The IRS requires all paid tax preparers to have a valid PTIN.

  • Complete Basic Tax Training

Even with no experience, you can start with free or low-cost training programs offered by:

Your employer (like Legacy Tax Services, in your case)

  • The IRS's Link & Learn Taxes program
  • Commercial tax schools (e.g., H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt, etc.)

These training sessions teach you:

Tax law basics

  • Filing forms (1040, W-2, 1099, etc.)
  • Using tax software

  • Customer service and confidentiality

  • Comfort with Computers

Most tax work is done using digital software — you'll need basic computer skills to:

Enter client information

  • E-file returns

  • Use video conferencing tools (like Zoom)

  • Good Communication Skills

You'll be working directly with clients to:

Gather documents

  • Ask questions about income, deductions, dependents, etc.

  • Explain refunds and filing options clearly

  • Ethical Standards

Maintain confidentiality of client information.

  • Be honest and transparent — integrity is everything in tax prep.
