Our purpose is to connect our alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations to raise the financial support necessary to advance the University’s mission and vision. With one of the leading development teams in the country, the Division most recently reached its $1 billion fundraising campaign goal 19 months ahead of schedule.
The Strategic Philanthropy team serves as university-wide ambassadors who develop relationships and connect alumni, donors, parents and friends with Colorado State University.
Position Summary
This position will be primarily responsible for qualifying university-wide major gift prospects and connecting them with their specific areas of interest across the university. The position will include frequent travel to the Denver-area (approximately 50%), as well as occasional national travel (as needed). This position reports to the Director of Development of Strategic Philanthropy.
The Assistant Director will focus on donor qualification, as well as cultivation and solicitation of first-time, leadership ($1,000+) and major ($25,000+) gifts. In collaboration with the Director, this position is responsible for creating and managing a strategy for a continuous pipeline of donors, including initial outreach, identifying engagement opportunities, and collaborating with other units to ensure effective donor transitions. The ideal candidate will be a consummate professional and will thrive in a fast-paced, metrics/results-driven fundraising environment. This successful candidate will infuse diversity and inclusion into all aspects of their role to contribute to inclusive excellence.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, business, marketing, communications, or related field
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in development/advancement, marketing or sales
  • Must be able to travel 50% of time and work non-standard hours
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or access to a licensed driver
  • A demonstrated ability to engage and effectively communicate with diverse audiences.

Essential Duties
  • Job Duty Category Prospect Identification and Qualification
    • Meets the agreed upon metrics for prospect outreach; initially includes a minimum of 180 Strategic Interactions, 1,920 outreach attempts, and 50 personal solicitations.
    • Works closely with prospect development, alumni relations, and directors of development to strategically identify major gift prospects.
    • Uses fundraising principles to develop strategies to initiate contact and develop relationships with potential major gift prospects.
    • Qualifies, cultivates, and solicits prospective major gift donors with the capacity to give $25,000 and above.
    • Facilitates relationships with donors, potential donors, and university personnel by providing accurate information and problem-solving strategies.
    • Documents all outreach and quality interactions using the prospect tracking system.
    • Collaborates with development colleagues to effectively transition primary donor management.
    • Maintains a high degree of confidentiality and adheres to industry policies and procedures for accepting, recording, and acknowledging gifts.
    • Organizes personalized campus visits and hosts alumni, donors, and potential donors on campus.
    • Creates positive relationships and inclusive environments with internal and external constituents of all backgrounds.
  • Job Duty Category Strategic Planning and Division Collaboration
    • Develops fundraising analysis, capacity and affinity assessments, and engagement recommendations for each qualified donor.
    • Establishes meaningful, collegial working relationships with development colleagues and other University offices.
    • Works with Prospect and Pipeline Development team to ensure continuous cultivation and solicitation by college/unit development staff.
    • Represents Strategic Philanthropy team at university events.
  • Job Duty Category Program and Budget Management
    • Submits timely contact reports and produces briefing papers for university leadership.
    • Independently tracks and analyzes contact attempts, success rates, and new qualified prospects.
