Drew University is seeking a Coordinator of Diversity & Inclusion Programming in the Office of Student Engagement. The Coordinator develops and manages diversity and inclusion programs for students in the Drew University community. These programs explore identity, with an emphasis on race, ethnicity, culture, and justice, and should address current events as they impact our multicultural communities. Programs should support students of multiple and intersectional identities.
The Coordinator helps to build inclusive communities through the Office of Student Engagement, and in collaboration with other university staff as identified. The Coordinator will lead efforts to incorporate student-focused diversity and anti-racism training into new student orientation, residential engagement, club life, and other designated student-centered initiatives. In addition, the Coordinator advises diversity-focused clubs and organizations from all three schools (undergraduate, graduate, and theological), and may serve on university committees. At times, the Coordinator may serve as a primary facilitator regarding dialogues on complex issues related to campus climate and current events on a national scale. This is an in-person position with expectations that this individual is on campus for the regular work week, including time needed for the coordination and implementation of campus programs.
This is a housing-optional position. If the Coordinator selects to receive housing as a part of their compensation package, they will receive a one-bedroom on-campus apartment and serve on the after-hours emergency on-call duty rotation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develops a comprehensive model for justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism programming for the greater student population at Drew University.
- Manages community-wide, university programming in collaboration with key staff to contribute to student engagement and student well-being on campus.
- Coordinates programming for diversity and inclusion, including but not limited to, theme months and weeks, programs that celebrate diversity: race, ethnicity, LGBTQ+, gender, ability, socio-economic, class, religion/spirituality; programs that establish and maintain opportunities for structured dialogue focused on civil discourse and understanding.
- Advise assigned clubs, organizations, and initiatives to assist with event planning, coordination, and club life, ensuring that programming frequency is appropriate and planned in accordance with other university goals and initiatives for current clubs and initiatives include Ariel (the LatinX student club), the Black Student Union, the Diversity & Inclusion Committee (student-chaired committee), the Drew African Student Association, and the Race & Racial Justice Committee of the Undergraduate Student Government.
- Manage mentoring initiatives for historically marginalized populations including BIPOC, first-generation, and LGBTQ+ students through the management of the BIPOC Student Mentor program, DrewFirst (first-generation student organization), and an LGBTQ+ Peer Mentoring Group (forthcoming).
- Specific duties include the recruitment and training of students and staff/faculty mentors and fellows; and coordinating programs and events.
- Establish and promote intentional dialogues, difficult conversations, respectful discourses, empathetic listening pertaining to campus, local, national, and global issues. Create structures to support a culture of inclusiveness and openness, serving as a resource for the community as a whole.
- Current regular dialogue programs include the Queer at Drew series, Black & Brown at Drew Series (bi-weekly), and Hot Topic Tuesdays. Develops communications (electronic, written, website, social media), provide assistance to the associate dean of student engagement in support of campus-wide messages addressing injustice, and support the development and review of student-centered policies and services that facilitate a campus community that respects, incorporates, and advances diversity, equity, and pluralism.
- Supports collaborative campus initiatives and serve on committees such as our university Bias Compliance Team. Serve as a liaison with other offices that manage diversity, equity and inclusion issues such as Accessibility Services, Title IX, Academic Affairs, colleagues in Campus Life and Student Affairs departments, and liaison with the surrounding community. Develop and incorporate an educational diversity co-curriculum for all departments within Student Engagement.
