Job Summary

Southwest Airlines is seeking a highly skilled Manager Operations Research to oversee the maintenance, creation, and recommendations of block times for Schedule Development. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in quantitative roles, such as Finance, Revenue Management, or Network Planning, and experience in leading projects through the project life cycle to implementation.

The Manager Operations Research will be responsible for establishing, fostering, and maintaining trusting and collaborative relationships with peers and other teams, and building effective partnerships with departments across Southwest Airlines. The role requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to collect, organize, visualize, and assimilate data to turn raw data into meaningful information.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of airline planning and schedule development processes, as well as knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, and leadership techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain positive relationships with all internal and external customers to ensure that all Operations Research activities are adequately informed and are performed in a collaborative manner.
  • Establishes, fosters, and maintains trusting and collaborative relationships, building credibility with peers and other teams.
  • Build effective partnerships with departments across Southwest Airlines both within the Commercial as well as Operational sides of the business.
  • Communicates results to Senior Leadership utilizing strong visualizations that aid in telling the story behind the data.
  • Manage and lead the enhancement of Network Planning's tools and processes that are used to build and edit Capacity and Schedules.
  • Continuously improve the data foundation for Network Planning tools, processes, and analysis.
  • Maintain continuity with Network Planning methodologies, ideas, and technology, and steer recommendations the Department should take based on characteristics of our business and knowledge of future plans.
  • Manage the monitoring of schedule performance and provide recommendations to Network Planning processes to improve forecasts and other business processes and tools.
  • Act as an advocate for continued training and skill advancement within Network Planning.
  • Mentors less experienced Team members, providing advice on data sources, analytical/model techniques, the framing of complex business problems, and the presentation/communication of project results.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrated experience in directly or indirectly leading team(s).
  • Fully functioning, broad knowledge in Quantitative roles in departments such as Finance, Revenue Management or Network Planning.
  • Descriptive and diagnostic data analytics.
  • Transportation operations or traffic or profitability analysis experience.
  • Leading projects through project life cycle to implementation.
  • Agile methodology.
  • Building presentations with high visual standards.
  • Presenting to Senior Leadership.
  • Optimization, simulation, data modeling, applied statistics, transportation, supply chain management, logistics, forecasting or operations.
  • Machine learning models and principles.
  • Developing linear programming models.
  • Analytical programming, query, or schedule/planning tools (SQL, Python, R, Alteryx, Excel, Tableau).
  • Database architecture and administration (Teradata, Oracle, SQL Server).
  • Building and maintaining ETL processes.
  • Using presentation and visualization platforms (Tableau, PowerBI, Excel, R, Python, etc).
  • Version control concepts and software (Git, SVN, etc).
