CLASSIFICATION: Staff-12 months
STANDARD WORK HOURS: 37.5 hours per week
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time
EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

POSITION OVERVIEW:

  • Provide assistance to the Entomology and Insect Ecology and Management Program.
  • Engage in both field and laboratory research activities.
  • Contribute to the preparation of research manuscripts and presentations for academic conferences.
  • Collaborate on studies focusing on biological pest control utilizing indigenous plant species.
  • Support experimental design, data gathering, and statistical evaluation.
  • Guide and mentor fellow researchers and students.
  • Utilize agricultural machinery and perform data analysis with statistical tools.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Execute field trials and assist with laboratory and greenhouse studies.
  • Establish and manage demonstration plots in partnership with collaborating farms.
  • Oversee the management of experiments, including site preparation and data acquisition.
  • Interpret data and create manuscripts for scholarly publication.
  • Instruct and support research assistants and students.
  • Deliver educational presentations and guided tours at various events.
  • Conduct laboratory investigations on the attractiveness of flora to various insect species.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Expertise in using microscopes and identifying insect and plant species.
  • Familiarity with office and statistical software tools.
  • Strong communication abilities.
  • Research experience and knowledge of USDA programs.
  • Capability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively.
  • Understanding of agricultural practices is advantageous.

SUPERVISORY ROLE:

  • This position does not entail supervisory responsibilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Field-based research requiring the ability to lift at least 40 lbs.
  • Travel for academic conferences and to partner farms.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Mandatory: Bachelor’s degree in Entomology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
  • Preferred: One to three years of relevant experience.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • A valid driver's license is essential.
  • A pesticide applicator's license may be required.
