CLASSIFICATION: Non-Merit - Employment is at the discretion of the Department Director

PAY GRADE: 108

SAFETY SENSITIVE: Yes; Subject to random drug testing as per the Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.

Position Purpose
The aim of this role is to provide education to high school and college students about career opportunities within the police department. Participants will gain insights into various divisions of the police department and the qualifications necessary to pursue a career as a police officer with Athens-Clarke County Police Department. They will also serve as mentors to younger students, bridging the gap between youth and law enforcement.

Job-Related Requirements

WORK SCHEDULE: A minimum of 8 hours per week, adaptable to educational commitments and cadet availability, including weekends.

May be required to work on religious holidays.

Regular and predictable attendance is essential.

Must collaborate effectively with team members.

When duties involve vehicle operation, responsible for the vehicle's safety, readiness, and operation, adhering to ACC's safe driving policy.

Minimum Training & Experience Required
  • Full-time high school student in grade 10 or above or full-time college student.
  • Must maintain satisfactory academic progress (eligibility in Work Based Learning for High School or a minimum 2.75 GPA for College students).
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the workplace.
  • Two letters of recommendation are required.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Must obtain First Aid and CPR certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Willingness to engage fully in Cadet education, activities, and responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are typical for this position. They are not to be interpreted as exclusive or all-inclusive. Additional duties may be assigned.

Perform routine non-sworn tasks under direct supervision.

Engage in a work rotation through various bureaus of the Police Department in preparation for a law enforcement career.

Act as a primary role model and mentor for younger students in the Explorers program.

Draft reports.

Participate in and assist with monthly community events.

Contribute to the creation of public statements.

Perform clerical duties.

Engage in physical fitness activities.

Other responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Understanding and ability to apply the regulations, policies, and procedures of the police department.

Familiarity with terminology used within the department.

Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws, county ordinances, departmental policies and procedures, and methods as required for duty performance.

Awareness of general law enforcement techniques and procedures, traffic investigation methods, the road system and geographical layout of the county, radio codes used in public safety, and first aid and CPR techniques.

Understanding of criminal investigation methods, practices, and equipment, crime scene processing techniques, the criminal justice system, and court procedures.

Knowledge of crime prevention and reduction strategies.

Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with supervisors, departmental members, and the diverse community.

Ability to maintain the necessary physical capabilities to perform all duties and job-related functions.

Ability to sustain satisfactory academic progress while fulfilling work assignments.

Ability to operate standard and specialized office and police equipment/machinery, which may include firearms, emergency equipment, radio/communications devices, cameras, recorders, processing kits, calculators, copy machines, telephones, and other relevant technologies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically capable of operating various machinery and equipment, including simulators, firearms, emergency equipment, radio/communications devices, cameras, recorders, processing kits, calculators, copy machines, telephones, mobile data terminals, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move, or carry objects or materials. This position requires: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, and standing for extended periods, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion. - Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels typical of medium work.

VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in various administrative, technical, or professional languages, including law enforcement, emergency medical, and police communications terminology.

NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, add and subtract totals, multiply, divide, and determine percentages.

FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with various machinery and equipment, including police vehicles, firearms, emergency equipment, communications devices, cameras, recorders, processing kits, calculators, and photocopiers.

MOTOR COORDINATION: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using office and police equipment. Requires the ability to lift, push, bend, and pull objects or materials using body parts as the position necessitates. Requires skilled movements coordinating eyes, hands, and fingers accurately and making precise movements with speed.

MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle various items such as automated office equipment, police equipment/machinery, medical supplies, recording supplies, and clerical supplies. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating the other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

COLOR/VISUAL DISCRIMINATION: Position requires binocular vision with good depth perception and peripheral vision, motion detection, high acuity, and light adaptation, as well as the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under considerable stress.
