Job Overview

Position Title: Patient Transport Specialist

Reports to: Supervisor/Director of Operations

Position Summary: The Patient Transport Specialist is accountable for the safe and efficient operation of ambulette vehicles, ensuring quality care for patients entrusted to our services. Additional responsibilities include assisting supervisors with necessary documentation and performing various assigned tasks.


Employment Requirements:

Applicants must be a high school graduate or possess equivalent education, be at least 18 years of age, and hold a valid New York State Commercial Driver License "C" or higher, with a Passenger Endorsement. Alternatively, candidates must be eligible to obtain the required license prior to employment. A clean driving record is essential, and candidates must meet N.Y.S. DOT 19A regulations for operating an ambulette or school bus.


Physical Demands:

Applicants should possess the strength to lift, pull, carry, push, and handle weights of at least 150 lbs. Mobility requirements include the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, and reach above and below shoulder level.


Work Environment:

The role involves both indoor and outdoor work in various weather conditions, requiring interaction with hospital, medical facility, and nursing home personnel. Exposure to ill and elderly patients, as well as those with mental health challenges, is expected.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Operational Standards: Complete assignments according to the work schedule; prepare ambulette vehicles for service prior to each shift; conduct required vehicle inspections and complete inspection sheets; ensure proper operation of wheelchairs, securing devices, ramps, and safety equipment; report and rectify any issues before departure; clean and prepare vehicles for the next day’s operations; respond promptly to dispatch directives; and perform additional assigned duties.
  • Documentation: Accurately document customer transports and mileage; report accidents and complete necessary documentation in compliance with N.Y.S. law and company policy.
  • Vehicle Operations: Attend defensive driving training; adhere to N.Y.S. seat belt laws; comply with all N.Y.S. driving regulations; document vehicle repair needs as per company policy; maintain cleanliness of vehicle interiors and exteriors; operate company vehicles safely and professionally.
  • Patient Care Responsibilities: Ensure safe handling of patients during transfers and transport.
  • Professionalism: Collaborate effectively as a team member; assist in the orientation of new staff; uphold a professional company image; resolve interpersonal conflicts; and identify areas for personal and professional growth.
  • Customer Service: Adhere to uniform policies; maintain good personal hygiene; exhibit a calm and professional demeanor; foster positive interactions with patients, medical staff, and the community; and ensure patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Attendance: Maintain attendance in line with company standards; report for duty punctually; provide adequate notice for lateness or absence; comply with time-off request policies; and assist in meeting staffing needs due to unexpected schedule changes.
