Library Assistant I Position Overview

The City of Chesapeake is seeking a highly motivated and customer-focused individual to fill the Library Assistant I position at the Central Library Public Service. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional service to our patrons and supporting the library's mission to build bridges to discovery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist patrons with selecting and locating library materials and general library information.
  • Maintain library accounts, issue library cards, and process library materials.
  • Shelve materials, read shelves, weed, empty book drops, pull holds, and perform other tasks related to routine collection maintenance.
  • Assist with programs and special events.
  • Instruct patrons on self-checkout equipment and basic computer needs.
  • Collect daily statistics and perform basic computer troubleshooting.
  • Create and maintain library displays.
  • Attend training to stay up-to-date on technology, programs, databases, services, and procedures.
  • Operate as a substitute courier when regular couriers are not available.
Requirements
  • Exemplary customer service skills and a commitment to outstanding service.
  • A growth mindset and a desire to learn and grow with the library.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and move 75 lbs or more with assistive materials.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate multi-passenger vehicles, box trucks, and hybrid vehicles.
