Position Overview: This role is situated within the Office of Research and Development, specifically in the Center for Environmental Measurement and Modeling, within the Air Methods and Characterization Division, across various branches.

About the Office of Research and Development (ORD): The ORD is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and environmental protection through rigorous research and innovative methodologies.

Work Arrangement: This is an office-based position, requiring regular attendance at the designated duty station. However, the EPA provides options for remote work and flexible scheduling as outlined in the Benefits section.

Qualifications: Candidates must meet the qualification criteria, including any educational prerequisites, by the application deadline.

For the Research GS-11 level: Applicants must possess one of the following:

  • One year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level, which includes assisting in the operation, calibration, and maintenance of field and laboratory instruments; analyzing experimental results; and preparing scientific documentation.
  • A master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in a directly related field, providing the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

For the Research GS-12 level: Applicants must have one of the following:

  • One year of full-time specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level, which includes operating, calibrating, and maintaining field and laboratory instruments; conducting scientific measurements and interpreting data; and assisting in the design and execution of field studies.
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field, providing the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Competencies: Your application will be assessed based on the following competencies:

  • Expertise in field and laboratory instrumentation for measuring the physical and chemical properties of hazardous substances.
  • Proficiency in operating, calibrating, and maintaining both field and laboratory instruments.
  • Ability to interpret scientific data effectively.
  • Knowledge of environmental collection and sampling techniques for air, liquid, aerosol, and solid samples.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Capability to design and implement field studies.
  • Experience in managing contracts, including preparing procurement requests and overseeing technical performance.

Experience Consideration: All relevant experience, including unpaid and volunteer work through National Service programs and other organizations, will be considered. Volunteer experience can contribute significantly to the competencies and skills necessary for this role.
