Job Overview

The Parks and Recreation Maintenance Specialist plays a crucial role in the upkeep, repair, and limited construction of the landscapes, structures, and facilities within the municipal parks system. This position is classified as essential personnel and is safety-sensitive.

Key Responsibilities

To excel in this role, the individual must effectively carry out the following key responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine maintenance of park grounds and facilities, including mowing, cleaning, painting, and waste disposal.
  • Ensure the daily upkeep of athletic fields and park landscapes.
  • Monitor the condition and accessibility of public restrooms, reporting any repair needs to management.
  • Perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Maintain and clean all equipment on a daily basis.
  • Operate a municipal vehicle as required.
  • Be available for work during evenings, weekends, overtime, holidays, and city events as needed.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements

The noise level in the work environment typically ranges from moderate to loud. Employees frequently work outdoors in varying weather conditions and may encounter exposure to moving mechanical parts, high places, extreme temperatures, and hazardous materials. Regular driving of a motorized vehicle is a requirement of this position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is consistently required to communicate effectively, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, and frequently stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The ability to lift and/or move more than 50 pounds is occasionally necessary. Specific vision requirements include close vision and color vision.

Mental Demands

The incumbent must engage in detailed work, maintaining a constant state of alertness and the ability to concentrate for extended periods. Building trust and confidence among colleagues is essential for fostering a positive work environment.

Safety Considerations

This position is designated as safety-sensitive due to the regular handling of chemicals and the operation of vehicles and equipment. Performing job duties with professionalism and alertness is critical, as any lapse in attention could have significant implications.

Qualifications & Skills

Basic experience, knowledge, and training in Parks & Recreation are typically acquired through a combination of education and relevant work experience.

Basic Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • One year of general work experience.
  • Certification from the American Red Cross or the ability to obtain it within six months of employment.
  • Previous experience in groundskeeping is preferred.
Knowledge:
  • Understanding of turf management principles.
  • Familiarity with health and safety regulations.
Skills:
  • Energetic demeanor with strong communication abilities.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficient in operating municipal vehicles.
  • Collaborative spirit with a flexible approach.
Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate positively and courteously with all stakeholders.
