Overview

The Senior Aquatic Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the safe operation and upkeep of a municipal swimming facility, while also providing guidance and support to fellow lifeguards. This role is considered essential personnel and is safety sensitive.

Key Responsibilities
To excel in this position, an individual must effectively carry out the following key responsibilities:
  • Supervise swimming lessons and aquatic classes.
  • Ensure proper sanitation of aquatic facilities, including showers, pool decks, locker rooms, and event spaces.
  • Maintain and care for swimming equipment.
  • Lead and mentor fellow lifeguards.
  • Monitor and patrol activities around the aquatic center.
  • Administer first aid and CPR to patrons as necessary.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction for patrons and events.
  • Assist with chemical testing and readings.
  • Complete daily reports on incidents, accidents, and pool operations.
  • Report any issues or concerns.
  • Provide assistance to swimmers in distress.
  • Enforce all safety rules and regulations.
  • Assist with swim meets, aquatic programs, and other events.
  • Orient and train new lifeguards.
  • Be available for nights, weekends, overtime, holidays, and special events as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Senior Aquatic Supervisor directly supervises part-time and seasonal lifeguards, ensuring compliance with company policies and applicable laws, while upholding Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) guidelines. Responsibilities include conducting performance evaluations, managing disciplinary actions, interviewing candidates, and overseeing daily departmental activities, including delegation of tasks, scheduling, and training.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This position primarily operates in a pool environment. The incumbent will engage in various physical activities, including speaking, listening, walking, standing, and lifting. The noise level in the work environment may range from moderate to loud.

The incumbent may utilize various equipment such as telephones, computers, and other office devices as required. Regular presence in a pool setting is expected, including working in non-air-conditioned areas.

While performing job functions, the employee is continuously required to communicate effectively and may need to lift or move objects exceeding 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and color perception.

Mental Demands

The incumbent must stay informed on relevant regulations, city policies, and applicable statutes. The ability to read and comprehend technical documents, perform detailed tasks, and solve problems is essential. Proficiency in analytical reasoning, math, and effective communication is required. The incumbent must educate the public on city policies and the importance of compliance. Effective management of deadlines and multitasking is crucial, as is the ability to maintain focus and alertness throughout the workday.

Safety Considerations

This position is classified as safety sensitive due to the requirement to provide life-saving CPR and First Aid to patrons and guests. The role involves handling hazardous materials, necessitating strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent harm to individuals and property. Maintaining a high level of alertness is essential, as any lapse in attention could have significant implications.

Minimum Qualifications & Competencies

Basic experience and knowledge in Parks and Recreation, typically acquired through a combination of education and experience, are required to effectively perform the essential functions of this role.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years of lifeguard experience required.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification.
Knowledge:
  • Understanding of pool operations and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with pool policies and procedures.
Skills:
  • Lifeguard training.
  • Water rescue capabilities.
Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate positively and effectively with colleagues and patrons.
  • Capability to perform safety rescues as needed.
  • Ability to administer CPR and First Aid as required.
  • Effective communication using audio systems.
  • Ability to interpret safety data sheets.
