Position Summary

The Apprentice Facilities Electrician role is a structured four-year program encompassing 8000 hours of hands-on training. This includes additional offsite training of four hours weekly for four years, culminating in a certificate of completion each year. All tasks will be overseen and evaluated by a master electrician or their delegate. The primary objective of this program is to prepare candidates for the journeyman exam administered by the State of Colorado upon completion. All activities must adhere to the National Electrical Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Agency Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70e), and company protocols.

Key Responsibilities

As an employee in this position, you may be tasked with various essential functions, including but not limited to:

  • Under direct supervision, first-year apprentices will acquire skills in installing and maintaining commercial electrical service equipment. Responsibilities include connecting production equipment to power sources, labeling receptacles and loads according to departmental standards, maintaining electrical panel schedules, and installing raceways and conduits efficiently and neatly. First-year apprentices will also learn to properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) and identify electrical materials, assisting in the installation of receptacles, switches, circuit breakers, fuse boxes, lighting fixtures, and electrical panel boards.
  • Second-year apprentices will continue to enhance their understanding of electrical testing equipment, circuitry, ohm's law, motor fundamentals, and troubleshooting techniques. They will learn to comprehend, troubleshoot, and install basic circuits, including single, three-way, and four-way lighting circuits, while adhering to all electrical safety measures and PPE protocols.
  • Third-year apprentices will achieve proficiency in installing electrical devices in commercial settings. They will be expected to understand, troubleshoot, and install more intricate electrical circuits, such as motor control wiring and control panels, using schematics provided by engineering or journeyman electricians. They will also be responsible for training others in electrical safety procedures and PPE usage.
  • Fourth-year apprentices will work with minimal supervision to design, plan, troubleshoot, and install all electrical circuits, performing the essential functions of a journeyman-level maintenance technician. They will document all work performed through electrical schematics.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to provide wiring support for production equipment, including the construction, documentation, and installation of control panels (excluding programming) for both DC and AC units.
  • Submit requisitions for electrical supplies necessary to complete assignments and utilize computerized systems (database software, spreadsheets, project scheduling, etc.) to track electrical work and materials used.

Qualifications

Acceptable training and experience include a high school diploma or equivalent. A current certification as an Apprentice Level Electrician in Colorado is mandatory. Experience with power distribution systems up to 480v in a commercial or industrial setting is preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of the NEC (National Electric Code).
  • Basic understanding of wiring principles for motors, generators, switches, circuit breakers, and fuse boxes operating on AC/DC power systems.
  • Basic knowledge in the installation of electrical panel boards, load centers, conduit conductors, and power transformers.
  • Solid understanding of safety protocols when working with electrical systems.
  • Basic proficiency in computer usage and software such as Word and Excel.
  • Basic knowledge of the electrical safety standard N.F.P.A. 70e (Standard for electrical safety in the workplace).
  • Solid skills in using voltmeters, ohmmeters, ammeters, and hand tools.
  • Basic familiarity with computer-aided design programs for documenting electrical schematics and designing power distribution systems.
  • Basic understanding of HVAC and machine controls.
  • Basic ability to read, comprehend, and interpret schematics and blueprints.
