Job Overview

Organization: Medical University of South Carolina

Employment Status: Hourly

Weekly Hours: 40

Position Summary:

The Sleep Technology Trainee is responsible for acquiring proficiency in conducting fundamental sleep assessment procedures and related interventions. This role operates under the close guidance of a sleep technician or technologist.

Key Responsibilities:

Preparation and Setup for Sleep Studies

Cultivate abilities in gathering, evaluating, and synthesizing patient data to address individual patient requirements (including physical and psychological limitations, current emotional and physiological conditions, and relevant medical and social histories). Assist in establishing final testing parameters and procedures in collaboration with the referring physician or clinical director, adhering to laboratory protocols. Review essential patient history and confirm medical orders. Adhere to established protocols of the sleep center during studies. Upon patient arrival, verify identity, collect necessary documents, and secure consent for the study. Clearly explain the procedure and guide the patient for either in-center or home sleep apnea testing (HSAT). Provide patient education tailored to their age group. Select and calibrate appropriate equipment for testing, ensuring proper functionality and making adjustments as needed. Apply electrodes and sensors following accepted standards. Conduct routine fitting and desensitization for positive airway pressure (PAP) interfaces.

Conducting Sleep Studies

Follow procedural guidelines (such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia assessments, PAP and oxygen titration, etc.) to guarantee the collection of accurate data. Perform necessary physiological calibrations to ensure signal integrity and make adjustments as required. Implement "lights out" protocols to establish and document baseline metrics (such as body position, oxygen saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.). Monitor data acquisition while ensuring study-tracing quality to maintain artifact-free signals. Identify, rectify, and document any artifacts. Record routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedures, and other significant occurrences to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic outcomes. Implement appropriate interventions for patient safety and therapeutic measures (including positive airway pressure and oxygen administration). Follow "lights on" procedures to verify the integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process, including rechecking physiological and instrument calibrations and guiding the patient in completing questionnaires. Develop skills in scoring sleep/wake stages according to accepted professional guidelines. Gain proficiency in scoring clinical events (such as respiratory incidents, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) in line with American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) standards. Generate accurate reports by compiling sleep/wake and clinical event data. Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary for providing age-specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of patients across all age groups. Learn to prepare portable monitoring equipment and perform data downloads. Educate patients on home sleep apnea testing procedures. Adhere to prescribed cleaning and disinfection protocols. Monitor patient safety and comply with safety protocols. Follow AASM scoring parameters diligently. Identify artifacts, inadequate signals, and equipment malfunctions, generating accurate reports accordingly.

Service Management and Essential Skills

Comply with relevant laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control. Perform routine maintenance and care of equipment and conduct inventory evaluations. Maintain current CPR or BLS certification. Develop computer skills suitable for the position. Exhibit effective written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrate appropriate social and customer service skills. Exhibit critical thinking abilities and work independently to analyze complex situations and apply relevant policies. Collaborate effectively within a team environment. Adhere to HIPAA and privacy policies. Follow directions accurately. Respond to patient inquiries related to procedures by providing appropriate education based on sleep center protocols. Adhere to sleep center policies and procedures consistently. Participate in quality assurance initiatives. Inspect and maintain sleep study-related equipment and inventory. Uphold professional standards of conduct.
