Position Summary:
The Sleep Technology Trainee is responsible for acquiring proficiency in conducting fundamental sleep assessments and related interventions. This role operates under the close guidance of a certified sleep technician or technologist.
Key Responsibilities:
Preparation and Setup for Sleep Studies
Cultivate skills in gathering, assessing, and synthesizing patient data to address individual patient requirements (including physical and mental limitations, emotional and physiological status, and relevant medical/social history). Acquire the ability to establish final testing parameters and procedures in collaboration with the referring physician or clinical director, adhering to laboratory protocols. Review essential patient history and confirm medical orders. Adhere to established protocols of the sleep center during the study. Upon patient arrival, verify identity, collect necessary documents, and secure consent for the procedure. Clearly explain the process and orient the patient for either in-center or home sleep apnea testing (HSAT). Provide patient education tailored to their age group. Select and calibrate appropriate equipment for testing, ensuring proper functionality and making adjustments as needed. Develop skills in the application of electrodes and sensors according to recognized standards. Learn to perform routine fittings and desensitization for positive airway pressure (PAP) interfaces.Conducting Sleep Studies
Follow procedural guidelines for various tests (such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP, and oxygen titration) to ensure accurate data collection. Perform necessary physiological calibrations to guarantee proper signal acquisition and make adjustments as required. Adhere to 'lights out' protocols to document baseline values (including body position, oxygen saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.). Monitor study-tracing quality during data acquisition to ensure signals are free from artifacts, identifying and rectifying any issues. Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Implement necessary interventions for patient safety and therapeutic measures, such as positive airway pressure and oxygen administration. Follow 'lights on' procedures to verify data integrity and complete the data collection process, including rechecking physiological and instrument calibrations and guiding the patient in completing questionnaires. Develop proficiency in scoring sleep/wake stages based on accepted professional guidelines. Learn to score clinical events (such as respiratory and cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) using American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) standards. Generate accurate reports by compiling sleep/wake and clinical event data. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care in the treatment, assessment, and education of patients across all age groups. Gain skills in preparing portable monitoring equipment and downloading data. Educate patients appropriately for home sleep apnea testing. Learn and apply cleaning and disinfection protocols. Monitor patient safety and adhere to safety protocols. Comply with AASM scoring parameters. Identify artifacts, inadequate signals, and equipment failures, generating accurate reports.Service Management and Essential Skills
Adhere to relevant laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards concerning safety and infection control. Perform routine maintenance and care of equipment and evaluate inventory. Maintain current CPR or BLS certification. Demonstrate computer skills suitable for the position. Exhibit effective written and verbal communication skills. Display appropriate social and customer service skills. Apply critical thinking skills and work independently to analyze complex situations and implement policies. Collaborate effectively within a team. Follow HIPAA and privacy regulations. Demonstrate the ability to follow instructions accurately. Respond to patient inquiries related to procedures by providing appropriate education based on sleep center protocols. Adhere to sleep center policies and procedures. Participate in quality assurance initiatives. Inspect and maintain sleep study-related equipment and inventory. Uphold professional standards of conduct.Minimum Training and Education:
High school diploma or GED, along with six months of direct patient care experience or one year of postsecondary education, or current enrollment in an accredited educational program focused on sleep technology.

Additional Information:
High school diploma or GED, along with current enrollment in an accredited educational program such as the AASM A-STEP introductory program, leading to certification as a polysomnographic sleep technologist. State licensure and/or professional certification requirements may vary based on position. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required, either from the American Heart Association (AHA) or an equivalent recognized organization.
