Position Overview

The Code Compliance Officer is tasked with upholding municipal regulations and standards to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the community.

Key Responsibilities

Primary Duties:
  • Conducts routine inspections within designated areas to evaluate adherence to city regulations, including property upkeep (debris, overgrown vegetation, abandoned vehicles, outdoor storage, and structural integrity).
  • Investigates property ownership, occupancy, previous violations, and habitual offender status.
  • Issues compliance notices, extensions, and citations as required to enforce city regulations.
  • Prepares written work orders for properties that remain non-compliant post-citation.
  • Maintains detailed electronic case files (inspections, photographs, ownership data, communications, citations, and case outcomes) using specialized software.
  • Collaborates with legal representatives to prepare for court proceedings when necessary.
  • Provides testimony in Municipal Court as required.
  • Engages with residents to facilitate compliance with city regulations in a supportive manner.
  • Collaborates with various city departments to formulate effective local regulations.
  • Works alongside other departments to enhance policies and procedures for improved enforcement and compliance.
  • Assists in addressing violations on public properties, including overgrown vegetation, litter, and vandalism.
  • Supports community committees and organizations focused on neighborhood improvement.
  • Establishes and nurtures a network of code enforcement professionals statewide to share best practices and enhance ordinance development.
  • Participates in community meetings to inform the public about city regulations, violations, and enforcement processes, while addressing neighborhood concerns.
  • Ensures consistent and punctual attendance on-site.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Four years of experience in customer service and problem-solving.
OR
  • A combination of relevant education, experience, certifications, and licenses that would enable the candidate to effectively perform the essential functions of the role.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
Employment Conditions:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 'C' Driver's License and meet state automobile liability insurance requirements.
  • Must successfully pass a drug test, background check, and verification of social security number.
  • Must complete state certification training and become a registered Code Enforcement Officer within 18 months of employment.
  • Adherence to dress code and personal grooming standards is required.
Physical Requirements:

The position involves a mix of office work and field inspections, requiring the ability to lift and carry items up to 20 pounds, with occasional moderate physical activity. Regular use of a computer and other office equipment is necessary.
