Role Summary

The Senior Commodity Buyer is responsible for executing the daily operations of the procurement department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Analyze and comprehend material specifications according to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) standards.
  • Interpret Military Standards and ensure appropriate communication to suppliers.
  • Understand and communicate relevant Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) requirements.
  • Identify and evaluate qualified suppliers.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with Program and Quality Management teams.
  • Conduct research, interviews, and negotiations with suppliers to secure optimal pricing, delivery timelines, and product quality.
  • Generate purchase orders for material acquisition, ensuring all necessary details are included (e.g., grade, dimensions, quantity, due date, and customer requirements).
  • Regularly follow up on and monitor purchased items, providing management with current status updates.
  • Track cost savings on materials and report findings to management on a monthly basis.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY ROLE
This position does not include direct supervisory responsibilities but entails indirect leadership duties concerning customer satisfaction.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill each essential duty effectively. The following qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required:
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong data entry, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Able to prioritize multiple tasks effectively while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Experience in the steel industry is essential.
  • Familiarity with purchasing processes related to government contracts.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A bachelor's degree in business or a related field from an accredited institution is required, along with four years of relevant experience in purchasing, finance, or sales, including three years in the steel fabrication sector; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business publications, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Capable of writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. Proficient in presenting information and responding to inquiries from various stakeholders.

MATHEMATICAL ABILITY
Strong mathematical skills and financial acumen are required, including basic financial knowledge.

REASONING SKILLS
Must be able to make informed business decisions and possess strong problem-solving skills. Analytical abilities are necessary to define problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Capability to interpret technical documentation and read blueprints is essential.

CERTIFICATIONS
CPPM certification is preferred.
