Role Summary

The Senior Commodity Buyer is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the procurement department.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Analyze and comprehend material specifications in accordance with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) standards.
  • Interpret Military Standards and ensure proper communication to suppliers.
  • Understand and communicate relevant Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) requirements.
  • Identify and qualify potential suppliers.
  • Collaborate with Program and Quality Management teams.
  • Conduct research, interviews, and negotiations with suppliers to secure optimal pricing, delivery schedules, and product quality.
  • Generate purchase orders that encompass all necessary details (e.g., material grade, dimensions, quantity, delivery timeline, and customer requirements).
  • Regularly monitor and track ordered items, providing management with current status updates.
  • Document material cost savings and present findings to management on a monthly basis.
  • Perform additional related tasks as assigned.
SUPERVISORY ROLE
This position does not include direct supervisory responsibilities but entails indirect leadership duties related to customer satisfaction.

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong data entry, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Able to prioritize multiple tasks with urgency while maintaining accuracy.
  • Experience in the steel industry is essential.
  • Familiarity with purchasing processes related to government contracts.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A bachelor's degree in business or a related field from an accredited institution is required, along with four years of relevant experience in purchasing, finance, or sales, including three years in the steel fabrication sector; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business publications, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Proficient in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. Capable of effectively presenting information and addressing inquiries from various stakeholders.

MATHEMATICAL ABILITY

Strong mathematical skills and financial acumen are required, along with basic financial knowledge.

REASONING SKILLS

Must possess the ability to make informed business decisions and demonstrate strong problem-solving capabilities. Analytical skills are necessary to define problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret technical documentation and read blueprints is essential.

CERTIFICATIONS
Certification in Purchasing and Supply Management (CPPM) is preferred.
