Job Description Summary

DEFINITION
Under the general oversight of the CPAC Supervisor, this role is responsible for maintaining the safety and organization of technical production environments, devising both technical and aesthetic solutions for theatrical performances and public programs, supervising the safe operation of technical equipment and materials, and executing additional responsibilities as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Technical Production Supervisor is characterized by the ability to integrate artistic and technical practices in collaboration with faculty, students, and fellow artists to deliver live and recorded performances. This position demands a high degree of both technical and artistic skill to balance the artistic team's requirements with the safety of the cast, crew, and audience; errors in this role can have serious consequences. The incumbent must possess outstanding interpersonal abilities to engage effectively with students, staff, community members, and volunteers in fulfilling the technical and aesthetic demands of stage productions. Additionally, strong time management skills are essential to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines, along with the adaptability to work non-standard hours, including evenings and weekends.

Incumbents in this position play a vital role in promoting institutional effectiveness and fostering a learning environment by overseeing the safe use of materials, equipment, and systems utilized in the Cultural and Performing Arts Center.

Essential Functions & Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Technical Coordination of Facility:
  • Establish and enforce health and safety protocols for all users of the CPAC facility, ensuring compliance with OSHA and Fire Marshal standards;
  • Develop and implement guidelines for the operation of CPAC technical systems and equipment;
  • Coordinate maintenance and repair schedules for CPAC technical systems and stage equipment in collaboration with the Technical Director and CPAC Supervisor;
  • Monitor the facility for security and liability concerns, collaborating with appropriate campus resources for resolution;
  • Collaborate with the technical team to research and procure new and replacement equipment;
  • Implement and maintain effective storage solutions for equipment and materials;
  • Communicate and enforce safety protocols for various theater spaces to both technical and non-technical personnel;
  • Maintain an inventory of scene shop equipment, stage properties, and construction supplies.
Technical Coordination of Production:
  • Assess production needs through script analysis and discussions with the production team;
  • Develop and manage the budget for technical aspects of theatrical productions;
  • Create technical production schedules, including load-ins, lighting setups, painting periods, and rehearsals;
  • Draft technical drawings for stage scenery and props;
  • Compile materials lists, procure materials and equipment;
  • Oversee the safe and aesthetic construction of scenery and props, ensuring proper use of lighting and sound equipment during productions;
  • Coordinate audience seating arrangements and soft-masking with the Technical Director;
  • Manage dismantling procedures for scenery, props, and equipment post-production;
  • Schedule lab time with faculty and ensure student safety during use.
PREFERRED FUNCTIONS
Production Design:
  • Conceptualize and design components such as scenery, props, and lighting, which may include:
    • Creating scale models or 3D renderings of scenery;
    • Drafting set design plans including ground plans and elevation views;
    • Developing color palettes in collaboration with the design team;
    • Creating lighting plots and related documentation;
    • Designing and programming stage lighting and effects for productions.
Duties may require the ability to:
  • Perform physical tasks including bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods;
  • Communicate effectively through various mediums;
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds;
  • Utilize manual dexterity for office equipment operation.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Required
  • Associate's degree with a focus on technical theater and design.
Experience:
Required
  • A minimum of two years of experience in technical theater.
Preferred Experiences
  • Four years of experience in technical design, including two years in a management role within technical theater;
  • Experience in both academic and non-academic settings;
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Knowledge of:
  • Safety regulations applicable to theater operations;
  • Proficiency in software such as Microsoft Office, CAD programs, and image editing tools;
  • Understanding of engineering principles related to scenery and rigging;
  • Familiarity with tools and methods used in stage carpentry and electrical processes;
  • Knowledge of production and design processes for scenery, sound, and lighting.
Ability to:
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues;
  • Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences;
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse backgrounds and abilities.
License and Certificates:
Required
  • Valid driver's license and eligibility for a California driver's license upon hire.
