Job Overview:

  • The Mechanical Engineering Project Specialist formulates the preliminary engineering/design strategy alongside the project team.
  • This role oversees the engineering aspects of the project from the proposal handover through to field installation.
  • They leverage their extensive experience and knowledge in a senior capacity within the engineering division.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the quality, cost efficiency, and punctuality of designs.
  • May supervise the activities of other Mechanical Engineers and Designers while serving as a mentor.
  • Spearhead the mechanical initiatives on designated projects, including the design phase.
  • Accountable for the design of machinery and assemblies.
  • Ensure adherence to design specifications.
  • Facilitate effective communication with other engineering teams, such as controls, robotics, and vision.
  • Acquire necessary subcontractor support and quotations.
  • Deliver mechanical engineering and design projects within budgetary and scheduling constraints.
  • Meet deadlines for quotations.
  • Assist in sales presentations.
  • Conduct visits to customer facilities as required.
  • Engage in the development of sales presentation strategies and materials.
  • Design process flow sequences and strategies.
  • Develop part handling and fixturing methods.
  • Create station concepts, including operating sequences and timing charts.
  • Manage material flow with system layouts and arrangements.
  • Utilize Lessons Learned and Best Drafting Practices during design concept reviews.
  • Formulate technical specifications.
  • Identify qualified vendors.
  • Communicate with vendors via phone and/or e-mail to provide line-ups, develop alternative solutions, and clarify quotations.
  • Generate BOMs and drawings for release to Manufacturing.
  • Identify and resolve issues.
  • Seek external/vendor technical assistance.
  • Promptly inform management of critical unresolved issues.
  • Maintain comprehensive project documentation.
  • Finalize pricing and delivery decisions.
  • Complete and submit proposals on schedule.
  • Ultimately accountable for the technical quality and commercial success of assigned projects.
  • Comprehend customer specifications and project objectives.
  • Establish and implement project timelines according to customer requirements.
  • Adhere to project budgets.
  • Collaborate with all operational departments, including Sales, Service, and Applications.
  • Address all customer inquiries and requirements.
  • Regularly report project progress and status to customers and management.
  • Participate in all meetings related to project execution and progress.
  • Oversee the entire design process and follow the project through to manufacturing, build, debugging, trial runs, shipment, installation, start-up, and final approval for all assigned projects.
  • Ensure delivery of all As-Built drawings, manuals, and documentation to the customer.
  • Review overall project performance with departmental managers and provide insights for future improvements (Continuous Improvement/Quality).
Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience in designing assembly machines or related automation equipment utilized in automotive manufacturing.
  • Strong detailing and drafting capabilities, proficient in creating mechanical prints.
  • Well-versed in GD&T.
  • Ability to review and comprehend FEAs.
  • Experience in quoting and estimating project costs is advantageous.
  • Strong background in designing with SolidWorks.
  • Experienced in designing systems around power and free conveyance, dials, indexing tables, walking beams, and other transport mechanisms.
  • Capable of collaborating with operations, controls, and other technical teams on projects.
  • Prior experience in leading projects or teams is beneficial.
Education:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Equivalent years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
