Overview:

The Mechanical Project Engineer is responsible for crafting the initial engineering and design strategy in collaboration with the project team. This role oversees the engineering aspects of the project from the transition of the proposal to the installation phase in the field. The engineer will leverage their extensive experience and expertise in a senior capacity within the engineering division.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the quality, cost efficiency, and timely delivery of designs.
  • May supervise the activities of other Mechanical Engineers and Designers, serving as a mentor.
  • Lead mechanical initiatives on assigned projects, including the design phase, and take charge of the design of machines and assemblies.
  • Guarantee adherence to design specifications.
  • Facilitate effective communication with other engineering teams, including controls, robotics, and vision.
  • Secure necessary subcontractor support and quotations.
  • Deliver mechanical engineering and design projects within budgetary and scheduling constraints.
  • Support sales presentations and visit customer facilities as required.
  • Contribute to the development of sales presentation strategies and materials.
  • Design process flow sequences and strategies.
  • Implement part handling and fixturing methods.
  • Conceptualize station designs, including operational sequences and timing charts.
  • Manage material flow with system layouts and arrangements.
  • Utilize Lessons Learned and Best Drafting Practices during design reviews.
  • Develop technical specifications and identify qualified vendors.
  • Communicate with vendors to provide line-ups, explore alternative solutions, and clarify quotations.
  • Create BOMs and drawings for manufacturing release.
  • Identify and resolve technical issues.
  • Seek external/vendor technical assistance as needed.
  • Promptly inform management of critical unresolved issues.
  • Maintain precise project documentation.
  • Finalize pricing and delivery decisions.
  • Ensure timely proposal transmission.
  • Ultimately accountable for the technical quality and commercial success of assigned projects.
  • Understand customer specifications and project objectives.
  • Establish and execute project timelines according to customer requirements.
  • Adhere to project budgets.
  • Interface with and support all operational departments, including Sales, Service, and Applications.
  • Address all customer concerns and requirements.
  • Regularly report project progress and status to customers and management.
  • Participate in all project execution and progress meetings.
  • Oversee the entire design process and ensure project completion through to manufacturing, debugging, trial runs, installation, and final acceptance.
  • Deliver all As-Built drawings, manuals, and documentation to the customer.
  • Review project performance with departmental managers and provide insights for future improvements (Continuous Improvement/Quality).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 5+ years of experience in designing assembly machines or related automation equipment for automotive manufacturing.
  • Strong detailing and drafting skills with the ability to produce mechanical prints.
  • Proficient in GD&T.
  • Ability to review and comprehend Finite Element Analyses (FEAs).
  • Experience in project cost estimation is advantageous.
  • Solid background in designing with SolidWorks.
  • Experienced in creating systems around power and free conveyance, indexing tables, and other transport mechanisms.
  • Able to collaborate effectively with operations, controls, and other technical teams on projects.
  • Prior experience in leading projects or teams is beneficial.
