Job Summary

The Benefits Outreach team at El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Social Services Apprentice- Benefits Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in connecting neighbors with assistance programs that they may be eligible for.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build awareness of local resources available to assist low-income individuals and families.
  • Develop a basic understanding of state benefits programs.
  • Effectively communicate information regarding SNAP and other benefits eligibility requirements to dispel popular myths that discourage people from applying.
  • Understand how to complete an application on the Your Texas Benefits website.
  • Learn how to gather information from clients to connect them with benefits they may be eligible for.
  • Complete required reporting to understand the full-circle of assisting neighbors and reporting back to stakeholders.
  • Connect with other organizations to build referral relationships.
Requirements
  • Enrollment in Project Vida's Community Health Worker Certificate program, to be completed during apprenticeship.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • US Citizen or permanent resident.
  • Resident of El Paso county.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion with handling of confidential information.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Positive and professional attitude and demeanor.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, take initiative, and be self-motivated.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including Excel.
  • Ability to pass a background check administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.
  • Ability to pass random drug testing.
  • Passion for El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank's mission.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • De-escalation skills a plus.
  • Mental Health First Aid certification, or to be completed during apprenticeship.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands

This position operates in a warehouse environment, requiring walking, pushing, lifting (up to 50 pounds). Additionally, this position requires use of a computer and other office equipment, such as phones, calculators, computer printers, and copy machines.

The person in this position frequently communicates with neighbors, must be able to gather and exchange accurate information in these situations, and provide excellent customer service. Occasional night or weekend work may be required.

Position Type & Hours of Work

This is a full-time apprenticeship, not eligible for overtime pay. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position may require occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.

The apprenticeship is a 1-year program conducted through on-the-job training and classroom training via hybrid classes. Community Health Worker classes are provided by Project Vida and scheduled with them.
