FCIL Librarian and Research Expert

The Arthur J. Morris Law Library at the University of Virginia School of Law seeks a highly skilled and service-oriented professional to join our research and reference team as a Foreign, Comparative, and International Law (FCIL) Librarian. This is a Professional Research Staff position with the classification of Research Scientist reporting to the Law Library's Assistant Director & Head of Research Services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collection Development: Serve on the Law Library's collection development committee with primary responsibility for evaluating FCIL materials.
  • Supervision: Supervise the FCIL library assistant.
  • Liaison Services: Serve as library liaison for LLM and SJD students, as well as one or more of the student-run journals at the Law School.
  • Reference Services: Participate in the rotating reference schedule for both in-person and online reference services, providing substantial legal and non-legal research for Law School faculty and staff, consultations with students, and guidance to public patrons.
  • Committee Work: Serve on Library, Law School, and/or University Libraries committees and project teams.
  • Instruction: May teach, co-teach, or assist with teaching for-credit classes such as FCIL legal research classes or Advanced Legal Research.
  • Library Operations: Support library operations and administrative projects as assigned.
Requirements:
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or foreign equivalent.
  • ALA-accredited MLS degree or foreign equivalent.
  • Substantial legal research skills, including in U.S. legal research, with knowledge of legal information systems and sources.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • FCIL experience.
  • Collection development experience, particularly with FCIL materials.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Written and oral proficiency in one or more foreign languages.
